Position Overview
Ontario Nature is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual for the position of Protected Places Intern for a 10-week contract starting in May 2023. This position supports delivery of Ontario Nature\xe2\x80\x99s efforts to advance protection of Ontario\xe2\x80\x99s lands and waters, in the spirit and practice of reconciliation. The Protected Places Intern will contribute to the short and long-term goals of the Protected Places Campaign by supporting policy analysis, outreach, and the development of communications materials through research and writing. They will work closely with the Conservation Policy and Planning Manager and the communications team who will provide guidance and mentorship. The ideal candidate has excellent research and writing skills, demonstrates an ability to work well independently and with a team, and is committed to advancing nature protection and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Principal Responsibilities

• Develop visual and written communications materials for online (blogs, website, social media, e-newsletters) and conventional media (our quarterly magazine, newspapers) to build support for protected areas.
• Contribute to team discussions about project planning, communication strategies and means of raising broader public awareness and support for protected areas.
• Support the development of presentations and briefing notes.
• Seek feedback from partner organizations, as needed, on draft communications materials.
• Ensure factual accuracy of all communications materials developed.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in progress or completed in a relevant field
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Experience communicating to diverse audiences, on- and off-line
• Experience with online research (accessing, reviewing, compiling and referencing information)
• Ability to prioritize work and manage several tasks with multiple deadlines
• Ability to work as a team member and independently (with attention to detail), seeking assistance/input as required
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office and social networking tools
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills and sound judgment
• Demonstrated interest in conservation in Ontario
• Meet requirements for Canada Summer Jobs:
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age

Desirable Assets

• Working knowledge of ArcGIS
• Experience with visual communications and design
• Experience with field work
• Experience working on environmental campaigns
• Experience working or volunteering in the non-profit sector

Anticipated Start Date: May 8, 2023
Type of Position: 10 weeks, full-time (funding dependent)
Compensation: $16.00-$18.00/hour depending on experience Location: This position is based out of Ontario Nature\xe2\x80\x99s Head Office \xe2\x80\x93 720 Bathurst Street, Toronto, ON.
