Reporting to the Director, Design & Construction, the incumbent is responsible for leading, planning, coordinating and executing multi-disciplinary construction, renovation and refurbishment projects across all areas of the College. The incumbent meets with user groups and project stakeholders, defines project objectives, develops scope of work, estimates project budgets, produces conceptual layouts & final designs, and engages consultants and/or contractors to deliver projects on time, within budget and according to specification. This position is accountable for 10-15 medium to large sized construction, renovation and/or infrastructure renewal projects per year, ranging up to $3,000,000 in value with up to 5-7 projects concurrently in progress.

What You\xe2\x80\x99ll be Doing

Meeting with project stakeholders to ascertain requirements; define project scope, goals and deliverables to support business objectives;

Analysing existing infrastructure and assessing suitability and/or required upgrades necessary to support project while considering College objectives and standards;

Preparing project budget and cost estimates for review and approval;

Establishing project schedule, defining project milestones and identifying critical path Project Design;

Developing project design specifications and concept drawings;

Collaborating with various departments and providing leadership in establishing detailed design requirements and specifications;

Coordinating internal resources (co-op students) to prepare design drawings;

Consulting with architectural & engineering firms and ascertaining services as required to develop final design specifications and drawings;

Reviewing design for compliance to College standards, governmental regulations and ensuring implementation of the latest technology;

Engaging local authorities to discuss proposed project and apply for building permits and/or obtain municipal approvals as required;

Preparing tender bid documents and obtaining pricing for construction;

Evaluating submitted tenders and negotiating contract award;

Communicating construction schedule to the College community and coordinating accommodations with scheduling as required to mitigate adverse disruptions;

Coordinating and monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with the design & specifications;

Tracking project timeline and achieved milestones to ensure on-time project delivery and communicating updates;

Investigating any changes that may be required due to unknown conditions revealed at the time of construction and providing direction to the contractor;

Reviewing, negotiating and recommending approval of additional costs;

Tracking project expenditure and communicating updates/risk with management;

Ensuring all project deficiencies are rectified by the contractor;

Monitoring safety and ensuring project site is maintained in compliance with all Health & Safety regulations;

Conducting project post-mortems to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements and making future recommendations for improvement

Researching best practices and relevant industry tools to assist with project planning, design and execution;

Monitoring, guiding and allocating tasks to co-op students

Coordinating internal resources to survey and update Master Plans related to building infrastructure

Providing recommendations regarding interior design of College space and required building infrastructure upgrades (i.e. building envelope, civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, life safety systems, etc.);

Performing other related duties, as assigned.

The successful candidate will also meet the following requirements:

3-year diploma/degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related field

5 years demonstrated experience with all stages of planning, design and execution of renovation and construction projects, preferably within an academic or public sector setting (equivalency to be considered)

Advanced knowledge of construction management, architectural standards, engineering principles and relevant codes

Advanced knowledge of building facilities and infrastructure systems

Proficient use with Auto Cad is considered as asset
