Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Project Execution Team in Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay is responsible for the safe execution of CAPEX and OPEX projects. The projects are multidisciplinary and located in various areas of the site, both surface and underground. Employing project management methods, the team is motivated to manage projects on the principles of safe delivery and commitments to cost, schedule, risk management and environmental management. The team\xe2\x80\x99s goal is to deliver all commitments to key stakeholders while being leaders in safety and risk management. The team\xe2\x80\x99s expectations are that all execution contractors also hold themselves to these principles. The project execution team recognizes that its employees are its greatest asset. The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Project Execution Superintendent to join our VNL Project Execution department in Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position is based at the Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a one week on, one week off rotation.

The purpose of the Project Execution Superintendent role is to develop the capital plan and budget, working with the operating departments, to set the prorities for each area, and prepare the information for capital approval process. The Project Execution Superintendent will provide project management services and leadership to deliver multi-discipline projects at various operating sites in accordance with Vale\xe2\x80\x99s project management principles of Safety, Quality, Scope, Schedule, and Cost. They will report to the VNL Project Execution manager.

The individual will be accountable for the management of the Surface Project Execution team in Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay for execution of both CAPEX and OPEX projects. The incumbent adds value by monitoring all phases of each project including Business Case Development, Detailed Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning. This role identifies any condition that could adversely affect the outcome, and implements corrective actions with the team to ensure successful completion of all projects. This role establishes and monitors targets/standards, best practices, policies, and holds his/her team accountable to these standards. The role works collaboratively with his/her peers in the PMO Group and cross functionally with all other areas of the operations.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Manage the Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay portfolio of projects and be accountable for delivery.
  • Regularly report on budgets and schedule forecasting.
  • Develop and maintain Maintenance KPI reports that includes the explanation of variances and trends.
  • Develop the 5 Year Capital Plan and associated Operating Master Schedule (OMS).
  • Audit compliance to capital business process performance, tool usage and standards.
  • Develop and execute discontinuous and continuous improvement plans \xe2\x80\x93 addressing common cause issues within the plant.
  • Lead team of project leads and construction supervisors through the safe execution of projects.
  • Collaborate with the site managers to develop and execute succession planning for the maintenance organization.
  • Ensure all close-out activities are completed prior to closing out the SAP project and ensure the handover package is issued to the Plant Owner.
  • Audit quality of data in Capital Tracker.
  • Work with stakeholders to clearly define the scope of work, key measurables; identify risks to the project, etc.
  • Ensure overall project scope is completed and meets key deliverables.
  • Manage the development of the project scopes of work for contractors and/or internal resources.
  • Coordinate communication between project sponsor, the project team, and other stakeholders, to ensure all project objectives are clearly defined and achieved.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, at various stages of the project life cycle.
  • Ensure that Construction Scopes of Work and all other contract documents clearly define (outline) our expectations prior to releasing for tender.
  • Monitor, manage and resolve any onsite conflicts, including labour concerns or jurisdictional disputes.
  • Liaise/Conduct project status review meetings with the project owner and sponsor.
  • Establish effective communication mechanisms between contractors, Vale personnel, and outside resources.
  • Accountability for the Capital monthly forecasting process and lead/participate in monthly Capital forecasting meetings.
  • Obtain and get authorization for the Project Budget and accounts. Use the Cost Control sheets, Capital Tracker and SAP to manage the project budget, coordinate funding requests, and manage project costs.
  • Monitor contract costs during the life of a project and follow up as required, including managing and approving Project Change Orders, Field Work Instructions, and Contract Change Orders.
  • Manage and audit cost control activities \xe2\x80\x93 invoices, accruals, etc.
  • Follow the Safe Production SHE Model / Program, execute a personal Safety Plan and maintain a daily log that includes safety work, while also ensuring that all project team members and contractors also adhere to the program.
  • Manage project specific safety plans to ensure they are adequate for the safe performance of the work, audit plans for compliance and recommend follow up actions as required.
  • Identify and provide training for direct reports and provide coaching as required.
  • Develop and maintain overall execution plan, schedules and cost Management systems, contracts and Manage QA/ QC programs.
  • Identify critical issues within the project (i.e. project risks and opportunities) that could impact outcomes (i.e. Schedule or budget) and develop action plans to address negative variances and reporting areas of non-compliance to the project stakeholders.
About You

Education:
  • An undergraduate degree in an engineering or technical discipline is required.

Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a similar role.
  • Minimum 5 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in Maintenance Supervision, Planning/Scheduling or Reliability related role.
  • Minimum 3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in Superintendent role (Maintenance, Operating or similar).
  • Minimum 3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial controls.
  • Minimum 3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience managing/supervising projects.
Skills:
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management, Maintenance Engineering, VPS Technical and SAP.
  • Maintenance supervision, project implementation, and engineering knowledge.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have strong organization and time management skills.
  • Takes initiative and is able to self-direct to accomplish goals with minimum supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid financial knowledge to make business cases and decisions.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
