Taggart Investments acquires land for various types of development opportunities in the Ottawa and Kingston markets on behalf of the Group.Work DescriptionThe Project Accountant will be involved in full-cycle accounting for various residential land development projects and their related corporate entities. The position includes coordination and review of high-volume accounts payable functions, as well as responsibility for financial reporting, budgeting and project accounting for assigned Ottawa and Kingston residential developments. The Project Accountant will have frequent interactions with the Residential Land Development Operations Team, as well as other accounting and legal staff as required. Reporting to the Residential Land Development Controller, the incumbent will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely reporting of financial and project management results.Major Responsibilities:Project Accountant

  • Liaise with the Land Development operations team to understand the status of various project activities and remaining costs to complete for each development project, and to ensure that supplier invoices are coded in accordance with the current budget.
  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of the payables and payments function assigned to the Accounting Clerk, including the timing of printing and issuing of cheques.
  • With assistance from the Accounting Clerk, prepare and execute other financial activities, such as Statements of Adjustments for lot closings, monthly HST filings and miscellaneous invoicing and collections.
  • Compile monthly financial files for each assigned company for review, including bank reconciliations and accruals, ensuring that adequate documentation exists.
  • As part of the monthly file preparation, review job costs against the current budget to identify any potential significant overspending.
  • Keep the Controller apprised of any significant project activities that will need to be considered in the weekly/bi-weekly cash flow forecasts.
  • Support the Controller in building annual financial files for assigned companies, including gathering all necessary supporting documents and backup, analyzing phase and offsite costs to complete, and generating draft financial statements.
  • Assist in developing financial and financing budgets in advance of the servicing of new phases, including determining the allocations of land, site planning and offsite costs to the phase.
  • Consistently look for opportunities to improve the usefulness and efficiency of existing spreadsheets, reports and processes.
  • Maintain all electronic and paper filing systems by ensuring all accounting documents are organized and saved appropriately and on a timely basis.
  • Perform other duties as may arise from time to time as directed by the Controller.
Statement of Qualifications:Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Post-Secondary education in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant accounting work experience, such as accounts payable processing. Previous experience in a project accounting role, or experience in land development or construction would be considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills, with an attention to detail.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to handle a high-volume workload.
  • Highly proficient in the use of various office-based software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, with advanced skills using Excel.
  • Experience using an ERP system or other complex accounting system, would be an asset.
  • Experience using Newstar would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and approach situations in a diplomatic and professional manner.
Physical/Sensory Effort/Work Environment
  • Providing service to several people, working under many simultaneous deadlines.
  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time at workstation.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime may be required during peak times and/or based on project needs.
