The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable
development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UNEP. This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer for biodiversity and health.
The Programme Support for Health, Gender and biodiversity internship has a start date of September 2022 for a duration of three (3) months with a possibility of an extension depending on the needs of the Organization.
The Internship is UNPAID and full time.
Interns work five days per week (35 to 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
Responsibilities
In decisions XII/21, XIII/6 and 14/4, the Conference of the Parties (COP) recognized the value of the “One Health” approach to address the cross-cutting issue of biodiversity and human health, as an integrated approach consistent with the ecosystem approach (decision V/6) that integrates the complex relationships between humans, microorganisms, animals, plants, agriculture, wildlife and the environment.
The Convention on Biological Diversity has developed a 2015-2020 Gender Plan of Action, which defines the Secretariat’s role in stimulating and facilitating committed, collective action on gender equality in the context of biodiversity and the need to increase awareness, understanding and capacity to address barriers to equal opportunity. In decision 14/34 Parties, the Secretariat and other relevant organizations were urged to consider advice and guidance on a gender-responsive approach to their processes on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. A draft gender plan of action is being proposed for adoption at CBD COP-15.
In the context of the Fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-15) scheduled from 7 to 19 December 2022 in Montreal, a series of engagements and activities are being planned on health, gender and biodiversity, with a view to increasing attention to social issues, gender-responsive and One Health approaches, and the importance of biodiversity for people, including in the development and implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
