Position Summary

The Program Coordinator position is based at the Waterloo campus. The incumbent will work with the Manager, Mathematics and Statistics Learning Support to design, implement and maintain a number of academic support programs for students preparing for and/or completing mathematics, statistics and other quantitative based courses. Support is required for undergraduate students registered in various science, business, economics and social science programs to achieve optimal results in their required mathematics courses. The Program Coordinator will be involved in the creation of assessment tools to identify specific areas of concern for students, and develop programming, conduct workshops and coordinate a tutoring/mentoring program for students requiring a review of prerequisite material, to aid in the transition to university level expectations. S/he will act as a resource primarily for students enrolled in 100-level mathematics courses, but will also provide academic support for a variety of statistics based courses from a wide range of academic departments, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The Program Coordinator may also undertake special projects, including in conjunction with other units within Teaching and Learning, related to the evolving use of the programming, as well as its online presence, through social media and resources.

Accountabilities

  • Designs and implements transitional mathematics programs, using both face to face and blended learning models utilizing MapleTA or other software, to support introductory level statistics and mathematics courses, in consultation with various faculty members;
  • Coordinates a peer mentoring program for 100-level mathematics courses;
  • Monitors student progress through remedial and support programs; prepares progress reports for course instructors as requested;
  • Schedules and conducts small group seminars to supplement online resources and programs;
  • Provides mathematics and statistics content support to students individually and in small groups, at both the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • Supports students in the development of professional work habits; pedagogical objectives include improving students\' skills in problem solving, time management, efficient and effective learning strategies;
  • May conduct pre-exam reviews of course materials in consultation with course instructors;
  • Makes hiring recommendations to the Manager of the unit; aids in the training, scheduling and evaluation of a team of 15 to 25 undergraduate peer tutors working in the unit;
  • Maintains a broad knowledge of initiatives for enhancing student success in both Canadian and international post-secondary environments, for use in developing programs to enhance student academic success;
  • Evaluates texts, software, and other websites to produce resources for student use;
  • Works with the Accessible Learning Centre as appropriate to develop specialized materials for students requiring academic accommodations;
  • Liaises with other university units to remain current on academic policies and resources available to students, to make informed referrals when appropriate.
Qualifications
  • A Master\'s degree in Statistics or Mathematics (with a concentration in statistics) and a Bachelor of Education degree, OR a Bachelor\'s degree in Statistics or Mathematics (with a concentration in statistics) and a Master\'s of Education;
  • A minimum of 4 years of work related experience, which must include practical experience in the field of education; practical experience involving the coordination and supervision of support staff also recommended;
  • Knowledge of teaching introductory statistics, calculus and algebra, and of the secondary level mathematics curriculum;
  • Pedagogical skill in optimizing the operation and educational value of formal mathematics support programs, and in developing diagnostic and assessment tools;
  • Demonstrated understanding of student success issues in the postsecondary environment including best practices for working with students of diverse backgrounds and needs, and a commitment of the principles of equity and inclusion;
  • Computer programming skills;
  • Experience with computer algebra systems such as Maple, and with mathematics preparation software, preferably LaTeX or Scientific Workplace, as well as for the internet (MathML);
  • Experience with course management systems, D2L recommended;
  • Excellent research skills to gather complex information from a variety of sources, including the ability to apply statistical analysis to data;
  • Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills;
  • Mental health training is an asset.
Hours of Work

This is a full-time, limited term position with an expected end date of 7/12/2024. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm, with occasional work in the evenings. When possible, the manager will adjust the schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in week.

Compensation

Grade: SH-E

Rate of Pay: $39.89- $45.59 per hour
