Job Details

Position Title: Professor and Program Coordinator, Television Writing and Producing

Status: Full-time

Faculty/Department: Faculty of Media and Creative Arts

Campus/Location: Lakeshore and/or North campus, Hybrid

Salary: Academic starting salaries are determined based on qualifications and years of related experience as detailed in the collective agreement for academic employees

Program Coordinator Allowance: As per Article 14.03 A 3 of the Academic Collective Agreement, a Coordinator\xe2\x80\x99s allowance will be paid in addition to the successful candidate\xe2\x80\x99s salary as a Professor

*The Program Coordinator position is a three (3) year term that may be extended.

What you will do:

Under the direction of the Associate Dean, Journalism and Writing, the incumbent is responsible for the following:

Teaching:

  • in-person, online or hybrid teaching. It is expected that the incumbent will teach across several programs in the Faculty, dependant on skills and experience.
  • create an effective and innovative learning environment that engages students and encourages student success
  • using accessible educational tools and technology to focus on student-centered engagement
  • incorporating universal design for learning in course design
  • providing regular and iterative feedback and evaluation to learners. The professor is responsible for overall assessment and evaluation of student work, including midterm and final grade entry.
Curriculum development, course design/revision:
  • regular review of courses in the program, including course outline creation and updates
  • participating in annual program quality assessment processes, which can include review of program maps, course learning outcomes and objectives
  • reviewing and revising course assessments
  • reviewing and revising course design, course learning materials and learning approaches when needed
Program Coordinator Duties:

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Journalists and Writers, the program coordinator is a professor who, in addition to their teaching responsibilities, are required to provide academic leadership in the coordination of courses and programs. This can include, but is not limited to, supporting, and mentoring fellow faculty, being the first point of contact for program inquiries, representing the program to external stakeholders and working with other team members such as schedulers, technical staff, and other administrators. Program coordinators work closely with the Associate Dean to ensure the program meets the evolving needs of the profession.

Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues and participate in committees and related associations. The incumbent is expected to support activities that contribute to Humber\xe2\x80\x99s Centres of Innovation (COI) and engage in research projects when appropriate. The incumbent will support student advising, student recruitment, graduate placement, assist with the promotion and marketing of programs and develop and maintain strong industry ties.

Education

The successful candidate will have a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or Master of Arts (MA) in a related field.

Experience and Skills

At least 5 years of industry experience and 3 to 5 years of successful teaching experience. The successful candidate should be passionate about writing for the screen, thrives in a collaborative writing room environment and enjoys teaching and mentoring emerging screen writers. The incumbent should have demonstrated ability to teach several courses offered by the program or Faculty, along with specialized skills in the following areas: writing for sitcom, episodic television, reality and late-night, short films, animation, and children\xe2\x80\x99s programming. This position may occasionally include teaching production, therefore the successful candidate should be able to demonstrate some production competency, such as experience in short film, television, or other media production. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to teach courses that introduce and center television writing and production in the lived experience of historically marginalized communities and include guest speakers, resources, materials and viewpoints that support this approach to teaching and learning.

In addition, the successful candidate will have engaging and effective teaching skills, demonstrated ability to coach and support students, demonstrated experience managing classroom dynamics, strong knowledge and application of current pedagogical principles, a student focused approach and a demonstrated commitment to fostering innovation and positive change. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of principles of equity and inclusion, be a collaborative team player and be committed to a positive team culture. The successful candidate will possess well-developed interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills and have demonstrated ability to contribute positively to curriculum development and delivery.
