Community Programs and Services requires a part-time Professor to teach in the "Deaf Empowerment Program" (DEP). The Deaf Empowerment Program is the 'Deaf stream' of the Academic Upgrading Program designed to assist individuals in acquiring the necessary academic standing to gain entry into postsecondary studies, apprenticeship training and improve their career and employment prospects. The Deaf Empowerment Program provides a learner-centred, goal-directed and outcome-based learning environment for adult learners.

The successful applicant will be teaching in American Sign Language (ASL) to Deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing adults in a barrier- free and learner-centred environment.

What you'll be doing:

Teaching one-on-one, to small groups, and in a virtual learning environment. Learner orientation, assessment, goal setting, and 'Learning Plan' development. Researching and developing teaching material, preparing individualized lesson plans. Fostering a positive learning environment in the classroom and laboratories. Using a variety of teaching and learning strategies including online learning. Other duties as assigned (e.g., record keeping and management, liaising with community partners, etc.).

What you'll bring to the role:

Fluency in ASL as the language of instruction. Thorough understanding and familiarity with Deaf culture and issues and the wider Deaf community. A minimum four-year degree in a relevant subject area, with courses in education or Adult Education; a teaching qualification preferred. A minimum 3 years teaching Deaf/Deafblind adults in one or more of the following subject areas: English, mathematics, basic computer skills, personal development, employability skills and life skills. Prior teaching experience at the postsecondary level with experience in teaching adults is a strong asset. Solid computer knowledge and teaching experience using educational technology is highly desirable (ideally, this background should be in a community college or comparable setting).
