The successful candidate will be responsible for applying scientific expertise, ensuring regulatory compliance, and serving as a trusted authority in biological matters.
Responsibilities
Conduct and oversee tasks such as inventorying, surveying, sampling, interpreting ecological data, reporting findings, environmental site assessments (Phase 1 and Phase 2) and providing expert biological advice.
Develop, administer, and implement comprehensive plans or programs for biological resource management (e.g., wildlife, wetlands, vegetation).
Carry out research initiatives and contribute to scientific advancement in biological sciences.
Mentor and guide junior or intermediate staff members, fostering professional development.
Prepare and deliver high-quality technical reports, environmental assessments, regulatory submissions, and documentation requiring professional sign-off.
Liaise with regulatory agencies and stakeholders, ensuring compliance with provincial and federal guidelines.
Advocate for and uphold ASPB's Code of Ethics and commitment to environmental stewardship.
Skills
Strong technical writing and analytical skills; experience drafting reports, regulatory documents, or peer-reviewed publications.
Proven leadership in managing field programs, projects, or interdisciplinary teams.
Excellent communication skills--both verbal and written--with ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders.
Sound knowledge of Alberta legislation, environmental regulations, and best practices (e.g., reclamation, assessments, permitting).
A commitment to integrity, environmental stewardship, and public protection, aligned with ASPB's mission and values.
Qualifications
Academic credentials:
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences from a recognized university (or equivalent with ??25 science course credits, of which ??15 are biological sciences, including at least four senior-level courses).
A relevant M.Sc. or Ph.D. may grant up to one year of experience credit per degree.
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years' professional experience in biology, acquired post-graduation (not exceeding the past 10 years).
Demonstrated applied experience in:
Biological inventory and field surveying, interpretation, and reporting
Management of biological programs including wetland assessments, fish salvage activities & wildlife survey
Compliance assessments, environmental remediation, decommissioning, and conservation initiatives
Professional Status:
Must be a registered
Professional Biologist (P. Biol.)
in good standing with the ASPB, or eligible to obtain the designation.
