Under the general supervision of the Manager, Resource Management or designate, the Biologist is responsible for conducting biological research, monitoring, and assessment of ecosystems within the shishalh swiya (territory). This role involves designing and implementing field studies, collecting and analyzing environmental data, and providing recommendations to support resource management, habitat restoration, and conservation initiatives. The Biologist ensures that all work integrates shishalh cultural values, traditional knowledge, and community priorities.

The Candidate:
Field Research & Data Collection
Plan, coordinate, and conduct biological field studies, habitat assessments, and population surveys in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments within the shishalh swiya (territory).
Identify, monitor, and record the presence and health of culturally significant species, including fish, shellfish, plants, and wildlife.
Use appropriate scientific and traditional ecological methods to collect data on water quality, habitat condition, and species abundance.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Compile, analyze, and interpret biological and environmental data using statistical software, GIS mapping tools, and other analytical methods.
Prepare clear, accurate, and accessible technical reports, maps, and presentations for internal use, Chief and Council, and external partners.
Maintain organized databases of research results, ensuring data security and accessibility for long-term monitoring projects.
Environmental Management & Restoration
Design, implement, and monitor habitat restoration projects, erosion control measures, and species recovery initiatives.
Evaluate the effectiveness of environmental mitigation and enhancement measures, and recommend improvements where necessary.
Provide input on land use planning, development proposals, and environmental impact assessments to ensure shishalh cultural and ecological priorities are met.
Community & Cultural Integration
May work closely with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to incorporate traditional knowledge into scientific studies.
Participate in community engagement sessions, educational programs, and school presentations to share findings and promote stewardship.
Support community-driven environmental monitoring programs and train local staff or volunteers in biological field techniques.
Collaboration & Representation
Serve as a key point of contact for environmental matters when engaging with federal, provincial, and regional governments, as well as industry and academic partners.
Contribute to interdepartmental projects, ensuring that biological considerations are incorporated into broader Nation initiatives.
Represent the shishalh Nation at conferences, workshops, and technical meetings to share research outcomes and advocate for sustainable resource management.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure all fieldwork is conducted in accordance with safety protocols, environmental regulations, and shishalh Nation policies.
Maintain certifications and training relevant to field safety, wildlife handling, and environmental protection.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) or eligible for registration with the College of Applied Biology.
Minimum 3 years of experience in biological research, environmental monitoring, or conservation.
Experience with GIS, data analysis, and technical report writing.
Knowledge of shishalh cultural values and willingness to work respectfully with Indigenous communities.
Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Cultural awareness and sensitivity to Indigenous knowledge systems.
Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
