Production Technician

Toronto, ON, Canada

Job Description

About RockMass

RockMass is a seed-stage start-up providing streamlined digital solutions for the mine of the future. We have a talented and diverse team working together to solve challenging problems. We are team players who value transparency and thrive on the hard work others put in around us.

Our Product - Mapper

We are building the future of data capture for underground environments. We're continuously inventing new capabilities for our vertical-stack solution in an industry ripe for change. Our product is a handheld data collection tool that enables engineers to capture real-time numerical data. We combine our proprietary algorithm with the same sensors found in autonomous cars assembled in a rugged casing.

You will be working with the hardware and software engineering teams within RockMass Technologies and will assist with the production and delivery of our product. You will be responsible from the beginning to the very end of the production of the Mapper: electronically and mechanically assembling of the Mapper to shipping out the units around the world. This is a diverse hands-on role, and it is perfect for someone who likes to take the ownership of the process and lead their ways.

You will excel in this position if you enjoy taking initiative, have a keen attention to detail, and are solution driven. You will also excel in this position if you enjoy hands-on building challenges and problem solving. At a critical time for our company's growth, your skillsets will offer immense value to our company.

We are currently looking for a 6 month contractor to start ASAP with the opportunity to roll into a full time opportunity contingent on performance.

About you

You will excel in this position if you enjoy taking initiative, have a keen attention to detail, and are organized. You have hands-on experience such as assembling/building, taking things apart, putting things back together, and repairing things with your hands. You are highly organized, from keeping the assembly desk neat to actively keeping supplies in stock for the BOM. You are detail oriented and love to dig deep if a problem arises with the electro-mechanical system in your hands. You dream about having your own makerspace, with all types of tools around you, 3D printers running in the background, and you are debugging the system with a soldering iron. Bonus if you have interest in software quality assurance, but not required. The most important thing about you is that you are excited about this role and are motivated to learn new things!

Responsibilities

  • Lead the production and mechanical assembly of the company's flagship product, the Mapper
  • Update mechanical/electrical assembly documentation with version control, based on design changes
  • Packaging of finished goods and preparing them for ship outs to customers
  • Generate checklists and reports to ensure production, assembly and delivery are on schedule
  • Organize and manage BOM materials/supplies and place order when low in stock
  • Assist with the opportunity to lead 3D printing for R&D and production
  • Prototype and test new mechanical engineering designs
  • Assess and triage defects identified in field, perform simple repair tasks
  • Optionally: perform hardware and software Quality Assurance (QA) processes and generate defect reports
  • Optionally: Manufacture cables based on drawings using soldering equipment
Qualifications and Skills
  • College or university degree candidate within a mechanical, electrical engineering or similar degree
  • Experience with mechanical assembly with various tools
  • Experience with soldering and basic knowledge of electrical systems
  • Strong documentation practices
  • Exceptional communication skills, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail and accountability
Nice to have
  • Experience as a professional assembler of electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience or interest in 3D printing and/or casting
  • Exposure to and knowledge of electrical systems
  • Experience working with embedded devices
  • Experience working within a start-up
Perks
  • Amazing learning environment within a collaborative, diverse, and fun team
  • Flexible working hours (our core hours are 10:30am to 3:30pm)
  • Monthly socials (even while we are remote!)
  • Option to take at least 1 long weekend every month (we care about work-life balance)
  • Office (when we return) is near St. Lawrence market within a small office building
