Job Summary
The Production Supervisor / Assistant Technical Director is responsible for providing technical and artistic client support, physical plant management and operational support to the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium and the University of Victoria Art Collections including events or activities that may be held on or off campus.


The University Centre Farquhar Auditorium is a first point of community contact for the University, attracting individuals from off campus, either as patrons or as clients. Production Supervisors are required to meet the highest standards of professionalism and appearance with attention to decorum, etiquette and personal presentation. Production Supervisors are directly responsible, along with Production Staff, for the patron/client-experience of the University and a direct reflection of the University to the community at large.


The primary function is to provide service to clients, artists and patrons while ensuring a positive experience by providing safe, courteous and professional support. Production Supervisors, along with Production Staff, are responsible for the safety of clients and patrons and the smooth operation of all activities including those at the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium and other locations on and off campus.


This position reports to the Manager of Production Services; with work performance being reviewed by the Director of the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium in association with the Manager of Production Services.


Provides leadership in establishing high standards of operating efficiency, safe work practices and audience and client services and support.


Job Requirements

Skills:




Exercise a high degree of independence of action and judgment in all related duties including planning, advising, the supervision & training of crews and execution of tasks. Knowledge of related, computerized and/or manual control systems, as well as other complex equipment and systems. Ability to accurately follow instructions, including those oral and written. Ability to direct the work of others to meet scheduled objectives Ability to maintain and deliver a high level of customer service. Recognize that all licensees, regardless of degree of professionalism or size of budget, have a right to expect and receive the same high level of professional service and expertise. Ability to understand and be sensitive to the aspirations and beliefs of clients from a wide variety of cultures as well as the ability to understand and respond to artistic needs of clients from a wide variety of background and levels of knowledge and skill. Knowledge of all applicable collective agreements, policies and operating procedures governing the work performed. Skilled in the use of computers and software used for event production and control as well as CAD and standard office programs (MS office, internet, etc.)

Work Environment:




Ability to effectively perform duties under demanding and often pressured conditions and with hard deadlines. Ability to work long and irregular hours in meeting deadlines under pressure, maintaining composure and a clear head in emergency or other stressful situations. Ability to work at heights and/or on elevated platforms and ladders. Accuracy and attention to detail.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:



It is expected that the incumbent will be specialized in one of the following areas: audio, lighting, or stage carpentry with a high level of working knowledge of the area(s) not specialized in as well as having working knowledge of projection systems and rigging practices.


Post-Secondary Undergraduate degree relating to event production and/or design (relating to indicated area of specialization); Live Performance Electrical Certificate is required; Full Entertainment Electrical Ticket is preferred. Other certification suggested, but not prerequisite: Super Host training, Verbal Judo training, Indoor Pyrotechnics certification, First Aid certification, ESTA Rigging and/or ESTA Electrical Certification. Thorough working knowledge of: + Production and stage management principles and practices.
+ Projection and video design, set-up, source editing and operation.
+ Rigging design, set-up, and operation.
+ Production methods, techniques, and operation as these relate to the Auditorium's systems, equipment and procedures, and as these relate to both University's and Auditorium's policies.
+ Art gallery methods, techniques, and operation as these relate to the Art Collections systems, equipment and procedures, and as these relate to University's and Art Collections' policies.
Current knowledge of developments in production equipment, techniques and methodologies. Knowledge of the hazards involved and the proper safety precautions required, as well as the codes and regulations applicable to the event service industry. Engage in professional development activities. Service to the University of Victoria Art Collections must be accomplished in accordance with national and international conservancy standards and Art Collections' policy.

Experience:




Five years of documented experience working on professional events, including two years of working in a supervisory capacity. Have worked at the Auditorium for at least twelve months and more than one thousand hours.

Other requirements:




Constant mobility, stairs, bending, lifting, reaching and heavy lifting in performing the duties of the position require good physical health Position requires performing duties at heights (ladders, catwalks and personnel lifts) including handling delicate and heavy equipment at heights. Position requires electrical work and electronics maintenance with associated hazards. Position required to drive light vehicle in performing the duties, valid BC Driver's license is required. Willingness to support operational and event requirements and work any shift, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
