We are looking for a Research Council Officer (RCO), Process Engineer, Techno-Economic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment for our Mineral Processing team. The candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Energy, Mines and Environment Research Centre within the National Research Council of Canada, offers process engineering professionals the opportunity to advance their career by contributing to development of novel technologies and innovation in the lithium-ion battery recycling and critical mineral extraction and refining that will underpin the reduction of greenhouse gas emission in Canada and globally. Our modern research centres provide a range of unique infrastructure for research and development to deploy best practice and innovation in mineral processing and metallurgical operations.


The candidate supports R&D by conducting process modelling, techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA) to demonstrate technical, economic and environmental benefits of new technologies and practices that are crucial for research development, scale-up and commercial applications. The incumbent is responsible for carrying out literature and data analysis, preparation of mass and energy balances, equipment selection and sizing, preparation of operating and capital costs estimates, financial analysis and reporting in an independent and timely manner.

The incumbent will also utilize aspects of scientific research, data analysis, process modelling, market assessment to identify investment opportunities and develop LCA tools to help decision-makers in assessing potential of clean technologies, and establish R&D priorities.


Screening Criteria


Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education


Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field.


Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or in a related field combined with significant experience in the field may be considered.

Experience


  • Significant process engineering experience, including, but not limited to, test work data analysis, development of process design criteria, preparation of process flowsheet diagrams (PFD), calculation of mass and energy balances, equipment selection and sizing, preparation of operating and capital cost estimates and financial analysis.
  • Significant experience with process simulation software. Prior experience with SysCAD and METSIM will be considered an asset.
  • Basic experience in environmental impact assessment and simulation packages, for example: OpenLCA and GREET
  • Significant experience with preparation of technical reports and presentations
  • Significant experience with project management aspects including proposal preparation, scheduling, budgeting, execution, reporting, project closeouts, etc.
  • Experience with experimental data analysis and mathematical modelling. Prior experience with computational packages (Mathematica, Python, MatLab) will be considered an asset.

Technical Competencies


  • Solid working knowledge of techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA) methods and principles
  • Knowledge of SysCAD, METSIM, HSC, OpenLCA and GREET.
  • Solid programming skills with one or more languages, e.g. Excel Visual Basic, Python, Mathematica, MatLab etc.
  • Familiarity with complex metallurgical processes/flowsheets.

Compensation


The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the RCO-2 level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093.


NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate\xe2\x80\x99s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
