The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Processing Modeling and Simulation.

This position will report directly to the Principal Investigator, afaculty member at the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering and director of EERG at the University of Calgary. It involves a wide range of work focused on research projects in carbon capture and utilization (CCU).

This position is located at the University of Calgary main campus. This position is a Fixed-Term, Full Time Employment for the duration of one year commencing from December 2022 with the possibility of extension based on the performance and fund availability.

The EERG team is in search of a competent Post-Doctoral Associate (PDA), preferably a Canadian Citizen or PR of Canada with degrees from multiple institutions, to aid in upcoming projects, to handle the additional workload in catalysis and reaction engineering, and to engage in collaborative research with other universities.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education: Hold a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering (or closely related field) from an accredited university.
  • The candidate must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five years immediately preceding the start date of this posting.
  • Able to perform systems analysis of chemical processes, develop mathematical models, and perform process simulations and life cycle analysis on emerging processes in carbon capture and utilization (CCU).
  • Familiar with energy and environmental research areas, specifically methane reforming, chemical looping, and carbon capture processes (liquid-solvent and/or solidsorbent).
  • Proven track record on process modelling and simulation tools, for instance, using Aspen Plus, HYSYS, Aspen Adsorption, Aspen Custom Modeler (ACM), DWSIM, gPROMS, and/or Fortran and user subroutines.
  • Understanding experimental results to kinetics and breakthrough curves to develop reactor and column models.
  • Perform techno-economic analysis, systems analysis, and life cycle assessment (LCA) of different processes (e.g., reforming, chemical looping, and carbon capture technologies).
  • Prepare, organize, and submit proposals necessary for grant applications.
  • Knowledge and application of Monte Carlo (MC) and Machine Learning (ML) in process/systems modeling will be an added advantage.
