PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Quw'utsun Syuw'entst Lelum Director, the purpose of the Principal is to provide educational leadership to both the students and staff of Yuthuy'thut and Quw'utsun Hu Yi'xwule. The Principal will be responsible for the overall operations of the school(s), staff management and the promotion of student success. This position is a full-time, permanent position aligned with the calendar school year and works primarily at the school with minimal local travel required.
Yuthuy'thut Training Program welcomes adults over 19 years' of age to upgrade their education as a step towards further education (Adult Dogwood Graduation Certificate) and employment. Cowichan Tribes members, their extended family, and other status First Nations are eligible to participate in the program. The core service is a 10-month program that runs from September to June, providing instruction in a variety of academic courses.
Quw'utsun Hu-yi'xwule' welcomes Cowichan Tribes members and status First Nations youth between the ages of 12 and 17 years' of age to enroll in our Grade 8 to Grade 12 school program. The core service is ten month program that operates from September to June, focusing on building literacy and numeracy skills. We offer academic subjects, along with Life Skills, Art, Physical Education, and Computer classes. Individual and small group sessions with a specialized education teacher are also available. Our small class sizes allow students to receive optimal assistance from our staff.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid professional development and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $114,316.53 to $122,442.08 annually.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management of School Operations
Develop and implement new program activities with the guidance of the Director
Conduct evaluations of program activities
Prepare reporting documents for secured funding grants
Prepare FNESC reporting documents for nominal role and special education
Prepare and manage financial and operational reports including budgets, invoice coding and staffing levels
Attend department and lead team meetings
Ensure Cowichan culture and traditions are meaningfully integrated into program activities
Coordinate staff professional development events
Provide basic individual counselling and support strategies to students
Refer students to internal and external resources as needed
Coordinate advertising and promotional activities as needed
Prepare a variety of reports, including FNESC reports, internal reports, nominal role, special education, reciprocal tuition and FNSA external assessment projects
Prepare, monitor and manage school budgets
Attend case consultation meetings with internal and external programs
Other related duties as required
Staff ManagementSchedule staff to ensure daily service delivery to students, including substitute staff and annual staffing projections
Participate in recruitment and lead orientation of new staff members
Complete annual performance evaluations for all staff members
Approve leaves and training requests of staff members
Ensure staff performance align with organizational goals
Assist staff members in development, implementation and evaluation of individual program activities
Provide professional guidance and support to staff with curriculum development and implementation
Ensure compliance of staff with all internal & external policies and procedures
Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelors of Education Degree required; Master's Degree in Education or a related field preferred
Valid British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate
10 years' teaching experience and 5 years' experience in an educational leadership position required
Valid BC Principals' & Vice-Principals' Association (BCPVPA) membership preferred
Leadership training is an asset
Experience managing an immersion development and implementation team
First Aid , CPR-C and AED certified required
WHMIS certified required
Food Safe certified required
Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and reliable vehicle required
Criminal Record Check is required

Extensive knowledge of Quw'utsun Syuw'entst Lelum programs and services
Knowledge and understanding of Cowichan Tribes culture, land, traditions and the Hul'q'umi'num' language
