Principal Data Engineer

within our Enterprise Data and Analytics team, you'll be at the forefront of a company-wide digital transformation. We're looking for a forward-thinking engineer who brings deep technical expertise and a passion for building scalable, AI-ready data platforms. In this role, you'll architect and implement modern data solutions that power intelligent applications, streamline operations, and deliver measurable business value. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to design robust pipelines, integrate diverse data sources, and enable advanced analytics and generative AI capabilities. Diriger des initiatives pour moderniser les systemes de donnees herites, en introduisant des architectures natives dans le cloud, en temps reel et basees sur les evenements. Collaborer avec les equipes IA/ML pour concevoir des pipelines de donnees optimises pour l'entrainement des modeles, l'inference et l'apprentissage continu. Developper et appliquer des normes de codage, des directives de modelisation des donnees et des modeles de conception de pipelines au sein des equipes d'ingenierie. Concevoir, developper et maintenir des pipelines de donnees evolutifs et des processus ETL en utilisant Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks et d'autres services Azure. Mettre en oeuvre et optimiser des solutions de stockage de donnees en utilisant Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL Database et Delta Lake pour soutenir les besoins en analyses et en rapports. Collaborer avec les scientifiques des donnees, les analystes et les parties prenantes de l'entreprise pour comprendre les besoins en donnees et fournir des ensembles de donnees fiables et de haute qualite. Assurer la securite, la conformite et la gouvernance des donnees en appliquant les meilleures pratiques, le controle d'acces base sur les roles (RBAC) et le chiffrement. Surveiller et depanner les flux de donnees, en assurant la performance, la fiabilite et l'efficacite des couts dans les environnements cloud Azure. Automatiser les taches d'integration et de transformation de donnees en utilisant les Fonctions d'Azure, Logic Apps et des langages de script comme Python. Fournir un leadership technique et un mentorat aux ingenieurs seniors et juniors, en favorisant une culture d'excellence et d'innovation.

We are looking for the following

minimum qualifications

for this role:





Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline. 7+ years of experience in ETL design, development, and performance tuning using the Microsoft Stack in a multi-dimensional data warehousing environment. 7+ years of advanced SQL programming expertise (PL/SQL, T-SQL). 5+ years of experience in Enterprise Data & Analytics Solution Architecture. 3+ years of experience in Python Programming. 3+ years of hands-on experience with Azure, especially for data-heavy/analytics applications leveraging relational and NoSQL databases, Data Warehousing, and Big Data solutions. 3+ years of experience with key Azure services: Azure Data Factory, Data Lake Gen2, Analysis Services, Databricks, Blob Storage, SQL Database, Cosmos DB, App Service, Logic Apps, and Functions. 2+ years of experience designing data models aligning with business requirements and analytics needs. 2+ years of experience defining and implementing data security standards, including encryption, auditing, and monitoring. Strong analytical skills and a passion for intellectual curiosity.

Preferred Skills

Familiarity with DevOps processes (CI/CD) and infrastructure as code. Knowledge of Master Data Management (MDM) and Data Quality tools. Experience developing REST APIs using Java Spring Boot, Python. Experience in building and supporting AL/ML software solutions. Familiarity with stream-processing systems (e.g., Event Hubs, Storm, Spark-Streaming). Experience with API integrations (RESTful, SOAP) for both internal and external systems to enhance data flow and automation. Experience working in Agile environments, familiarity with Agile tools like Jira or Azure DevOps. Experience in data and analytics within the Life Sciences industry is a plus.

Location

: Remote (from one of our Canadian sites).

Schedule

: Daytime between Monday and Friday. Permanent position as of the hiring, full-time 37.5hrs per week. Annual bonus based on performance.

About Safety Assessment



Charles River is committed to helping our partners expedite their preclinical drug development with exceptional safety assessment services, state-of-the-art facilities and expert regulatory guidance. From individual specialty toxicology and IND enabling studies to tailored packages and total laboratory support, our deeply experienced team can design and execute programs that anticipate challenges and avoid roadblocks for a smooth, efficient journey to market. Each year approximately 300 investigational new drug (IND) programs are conducted in our Safety Assessment facilities.
