About Potash

In 2021, BHP approved a CA$7.5 billion investment in Jansen Stage 1 in Saskatchewan, Canada, which is aligned with their strategy of growing exposure to future facing commodities in world-class assets. Potash opens a new front for growth and is an expandable resource that can support a century or more of operations. Potash provides BHP with greater diversification by commodity, country, and customer.

Purpose

Reporting to the Manager Strategic Services Potash, the Principal Commercial Development will develop and implement business models for Potash Strategic Services with a focus on logistics (rail and export terminal) arrangements, ensuring development and execution of long-term strategies consistent with business plans in a sustainable and competitive manner.

Key relationships:
Internal - Logistics, Sustainability and Innovation, Minerals Americas Strategic Services, VP Potash, and Potash business functions such as Operations, Legal, Finance, Projects Commercial and Procurement, Project Controls, and other project leadership
External - Commercial counterparties, regulators, industry associations, community stakeholders and consultants

Work Location

Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.

About the Role

Accountabilities:

  • Identifying and evaluating opportunities providing direction for long-term strategy development to deliver logistics solutions to the Potash business
  • Supporting the delivery and management of logistics (rail and export terminal) arrangements, including leading and participating in contract negotiations for strategic rail and port arrangements
  • Managing relationships with key stakeholders, counterparties, and external contributors
  • Ensuring cross-functional alignment of various areas involved in project development, project execution and readiness for future operations
  • Leading reporting and governance activities for the function including short- and long-term planning requirements
  • Representing the organization on appropriate committees/engagements
  • Managing business work planning and related budget
  • Identifying and managing business risks ensuring risk management strategies are implemented in a timely manner
  • Ensuring all work undertaken is consistent with Corporate Requirements and Code of Conduct
Measures of success:
  • Successful delivery of strategies and strategic third-party arrangements to support Potash business objectives
  • Meeting project milestones on time and within budget/risk tolerance
  • Key relationships are well managed both internally and externally
  • Risks are identified and managed appropriately
About You
  • Relevant business degree with preference for related designation or post-graduate qualification
  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive business/commercial development experience in similar roles
  • Specific experience in leading negotiations for strategically important contracts a requirement
  • Experience in North American railway, export terminal, and/or utility arrangements considered an asset
  • Long-term contract management and negotiation experience
  • Experience in logistics, mining, finance, engineering
  • Proven experience in project planning and monitoring
  • Strong understanding of financial evaluation methods
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills required
  • Strong track record of managing stakeholder relationships required
  • Ability to travel domestically or international as needed
