AECOM Buildings + Places, our Architectural Design practice, is seeking a Principal Architect to lead our Ottawa-based office.

AECOM Buildings + Places Canada (B+P Canada) is a vibrant and growing fully integrated team spanning architecture, all the building\'s engineering disciplines, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, economics and asset management for design and infrastructure projects. Project assignments may include, although not limited to: Transit and Municipal, Commercial, and Institutional projects in Justice, Education and Government.

Job Summary:

The Principal Architect provides both architectural technical and management leadership to the team. The Principal Architect initiates and maintains extensive contacts with senior-level architects and/or designers within the company as well as key officials of other organizations and companies and is skilled in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues. This person will be a part of AECOM\'s Building + Places Canada Leadership team helping to win, design and lead teams of architects on projects across a diverse set of market sectors.

We are seeking an individual with demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature architectural judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual design / technical problems, determining program objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for diverse activities.

The Principal Architect\'s main responsibilities will include:

  • Design, technical, and management leadership for the architectural team
  • Supervising, recruiting, and promoting staff
  • Client relations and development
  • Leading architecture-driven pursuits
  • Collaborating with the other AECOM architecture practices around the Americas and sometimes globally
  • Be the face of AECOM Architecture to the market within the industry, such as the OAA, and to clients
  • Foster a design culture in the studio
The responsibilities of this position will also include, but are not limited to:
  • Cultivate and maintain client relationships
  • Oversee and lead multiple projects through all phases of design, and actively lead the design process for each of these clients and opportunities
  • Work with Project Managers to define scope from initial project information and oversee preparation of associated fee proposals, schedules, work plans and additional service requests as required
  • Provide guidance and direction to ensure presentations and deliverables meet a high standard of graphic quality that exceed client expectations and advance the reputation of the firm
  • Establish an encouraging and collaborative environment for all project teams
  • Participate in the annual performance review of employees, further developing staff skills and growth through open dialogue
  • Actively participate in building the positive perception of AECOM in the region
  • Provide mentorship, coaching and motivating project teams and individuals
  • Become actively involved in organizations at the leadership level
  • Promote a fun and collaborative work culture
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in architecture, interior design, or related field
  • 8+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Licensed Architect
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in the planning and design of various institutional, commercial and industrial facilities
  • The position requires a strong background and technical skills in architectural detailing and design and must have held a similar position or played a similar role
  • Experience as a practicing architect responsible for the delivery of complex programmatic projects
  • Expertise in architectural building systems and products
  • Proven knowledge and expertise in completing construction documents and coordinating with all engineering disciplines and project stakeholders
  • Proven expertise with building code and regulations including zoning, accessibility regulations, fire and egress requirements
  • Proven expertise and ability to mentor younger architects and oversee their work for completeness and accuracy
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work with different personalities in difficult settings
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have strong project management skills, including the ability to maintain project budgets and schedules, and delegate work to junior architects.
  • MS Office knowledge
  • Leadership and good presentation skills
  • More advanced education is preferred
  • Proficiency in REVIT and AutoCAD
  • LEED accredited professional
