The Women\'s College Hospital Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) is designed to introduce students to the world of scientific and health research. Our program is uniquely tailored to give students a hands-on experience that helps them take the next step in their academic careers and learning journeys. The Summer Student Research Program places students in approved projects for a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 16 weeks. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Listed below are some of the areas of research available for Summer 2024, please note projects are subject to change due to funding. Please review the list below and select a minimum of three (3) areas you would like to apply for, and include a statement outlining what interests you about this area of research at WCH. (200 words maximum)

  • Addictions Research- opportunities for graduate students
  • Aging - opportunities for health professionals and medical students
  • Anesthesiology - opportunities for undergraduate and medical students
  • Breast Cancer Research - opportunities for undergraduate and medical students and health professionals
  • Chronic Disease and Inflammation (e.g.: Cardiology, Rheumatology, Diabetes, Kidney Disease) -opportunities for undergraduate and medical students
  • Dermatology - opportunities for medical students
  • Equitable Healthcare - opportunities for undergraduate students
  • Health System Solutions and Virtual Care - opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Indigenous Health and Wellness - opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence - opportunities for graduate students
  • Trans-Related Healthcare - opportunities for undergraduate and medical students
  • Women\'s Health - opportunities for undergraduate and medical students
  • Women\'s Mental Health - opportunities for undergraduate students
Summary of Duties, but not limited to:
Individual student responsibilities and tasks will vary depending on the final research project and will be up to the discretion of the Principal Investigator. The summer research student may be involved in some or all the following activities:
  • Working with the project team and relevant partners to implement a project
  • Recruiting participants/patients to the study
  • Assisting with data collection, data entry and data management
  • Helping with literature searches as required
  • Assisting investigators in preparation of materials for presentation and publication
  • Observing clinician-researchers in a clinic setting and/or during rounds as appropriate

As a WCH Summer Research Student, it is expected that you will participate in the activities of the Summer Student Research Program, and Academics at WCH, including Academics Rounds, SSRP Panels and webinars, Summer Student Research Week, and any other networking initiatives.
As a learner, you will work to identify and engage in best practices that contribute to the delivery of safe, cultural appropriate, exemplary care.

Qualifications:
  • Student must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or have graduated in Spring 2024
  • Individuals with a demonstrated interest and commitment to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in the health care sciences are preferred
  • Understanding various equity health frameworks and tools considered an asset
  • Willingness to respectfully engage with culturally diverse ways of knowing considered an asset
  • Highly motivated; capacity and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated interest in scientific research
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills with great attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated record of good performance and acceptable attendance will be considered as part of the selection criteria
  • Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women\'s College Hospital
  • This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all
