The Alberta Health Services (AHS) Human Factors team is looking for a post-secondary summer student to support the provincial Patient Safety department. The Human Factors team provides leadership and expertise related to usability, user centered design, patient safety and e-Safety (electronic health systems). A successful candidate will have strong analytical, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with a passion for usability, research, and an eye for excellent design. This is currently a work from home position that also requires on-site consultation and field work at AHS sites throughout Alberta. The position can be based out of Calgary or Edmonton.
Description:
The Human Factors (Co-op) Summer Student will assist the Human Factors team by applying expertise in human factors and usability engineering across both team-based and independent projects. If chosen, you will employ human factors methodologies (such as heuristic evaluation and usability testing) to assess healthcare environments, workflows, equipment, user interfaces, and forms (like checklists and order sets). As our selected candidate, you'll also contribute to designing solutions that enhance patient safety and have the chance to participate in job shadowing, interviews, and focus groups. You'll be expected to analyze data using both quantitative and qualitative methods, helping to prepare detailed reports and presentations. This role reports to the Director of Human Factors.

Required Qualifications: Required knowledge, skills and abilities: 3rd or 4th year undergraduate or graduate student specializing in human factors or a related field (e.g. Psychology, Industrial or Systems Engineering, Ergonomics, Computer Science, Biomedical or Clinical Engineering, Health Informatics, User Experience (UX), Information Design). Strong understanding of human factors including concepts, processes, design principles and tools. Knowledge of user-centered design methodologies including ethnographic studies, task and user analysis methods, heuristic evaluations, usability testing and experimental design. Analytical and problem-solving abilities with "out of the box" creative thinking. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience working in a team environment. Interest in patient safety and quality improvement in healthcare. Additional Required Qualifications: To be considered for employment all candidates must be: Registered as a full-time post-secondary student in an accredited institution. Currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution. Returning for courses in the next academic term. Legally entitled to work in Canada. Willing to travel locally and throughout the province as needed. Able to self-fund temporarily relocating to Alberta (if applicable). Preferred Qualifications: Understanding of the healthcare industry. Experience working independently and remotely. Experience with research processes and publishing. Attention to detail. Ability to time manage several projects and tasks at the same time.
