Department/Faculty Summary We are a research-intensive department focusing on advanced studies in Bacteriology, Immunology, Virology, and the interface between these fields. Position Summary Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Gotte), the PDF works in a laboratory that studies viral proteins using biochemical and genetic techniques to understand their mechanisms and facilitate knowledge-based drug design. The successful applicant would be expected to perform experiments in addition to some administrative duties. While the Principal Investigator would be the direct supervisor, the PDF will eventually become largely independent with regards to their day-today activities. Duties
  • Performs molecular biology and biochemical techniques.
  • PCR (quantitative, non-quantitative, and RT).
  • SDS-PAGE and western blotting.
  • Expression and purification of recombinant proteins.
  • Development and use of enzyme assays.
  • Testing of antiviral drug candidates in cell culture.
  • Works with baculovirus, bacterial and mammalian expression systems.
  • Presents research findings at lab meetings.
  • Contributes to the filling of lab databases.
  • Other duties as determined by the principle investigator, including writing of grant applications and scientific papers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD degree in biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, genetics, virology or a related discipline is required.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills. It is important that the incumbent be a team player.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred: Experience in drug discovery and development activities at chemical, biochemical or virological levels.
  • Considered an asset: Experience in computational tools and/or structural biology.
