Job Description

The Port Captain is accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the assigned fleet. This role implements and maintains operational policies and safety procedures ensuring compliance with all company and statutory requirements while providing guidance and mentorship for the shipboard crew.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Kitimat, BC.

What you'll do

Oversees and organizes the safe and efficient operation of the assigned fleet. This includes daily problem solving, troubleshooting and complaint handling on operational issues, training and supervision of all seagoing personnel, and overseeing and regulating crew overtime and deck ordering. Provides leadership by motivating employees, conducting employee performance evaluations and conducting ongoing training. Builds strong team morale and facilitates communication between the corporate office and the seagoing personnel. Builds safety culture and provides guidance to vessel crews on company policy and procedures. Assists in the development of the Marine Operations Manual, Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Working Procedures. Implements policy and procedures for vessels and marine crews. Oversees maintenance and replacement of vessels' equipment. Prepares the vessels and marine crews for Transport Canada Inspection and Certification and monitors compliance with all applicable regulations. Provides operational expertise to other departments. Conducts terminal investigation and condition reporting (e.g. new loading facility, new route, new transported commodity). Contributes to the development of vessel supplies budget covering all deck supplies, towing and safety equipment. Authorizes and monitors deck supplies and stores orderings. Assists HSE Manager with incident investigations including property damage, personal injury, or environmental incidents to identify root cause. Follows up to ensure corrective measures implemented to prevent future incidents. Updates Intelex as needed for closure. Ensures personnel and gear readiness for emergencies needed for Oil & Gas facility Will be required to work in a 24/7 operations environment. Performs additional duties as required.

What you'll bring

Degree in Nautical Sciences or Maritime Studies preferred. Masters or Senior Officer experience. Minimum 5 Years of Shipboard or Marine Operations Management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Navigational knowledge of B.C. Coasts. Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International Marine Regulations. Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and Occupational Safety and Health Regulations. Knowledge of the marine industry on the West Coast of North America and understanding of Oil and Gas operations. Understanding of the operations of a tug fleet. Communication and supervisory skills. Self starter with the ability to work both alone and in a team environment. Problem-solving abilities. Ability to handle emergency response effectively and efficiently. Able to lead and perform under high pressure. Advanced Microsoft Office - Word and Excel. Ability to develop voyage plans.

The estimated salary for this position is $109,800 - $134,200. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
