Job Description

The Seaspan Ferries Port Captain is accountable for the efficient operation of the assigned fleet. This role implements and maintains operational policies and safety procedures, making sure Seaspan Ferries vessels and marine crews are in compliance with all company and statutory requirements at all times while providing guidance and mentorship for the shipboard crew. The Operations Specialist will work in collaboration with the Manager Vessel Operations, Port Captains and Safety Department while assisting other departments as required.


Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 7700 Hopcott Road, Delta.



What you'll do



Oversees and organizes the efficient operation of the assigned fleet, which includes daily problem solving, troubleshooting and complaint handling on operational issues, training and supervision of all seagoing personnel, and overseeing and regulating deck crew overtime and deck ordering. Provides leadership in motivating employee performance, which includes conducting employee performance evaluations and providing ongoing training and assessments. Build strong team morale and opens up communication lines between the corporate office and the seagoing personnel. Promotes and ensures workplace safety through ongoing monitoring of company policies and procedures for marine vessels and crews. This includes coordinating operational and occupational safety training for marine crews, attending safety meetings, and providing regular written and verbal communications, onboard visits and visual checks. Maintaining marine structural components including mooring rope inspection, replacement and inventory. Provides operational expertise and support to other internal departments. Conducts terminal investigation and condition reporting as required (e.g. new loading facility, new route, new commodity being transported, etc.). Organizes and supervises specialty barge and large project loading and un-loading ensuring all operational health and safety measures are in place. Maintains vessels' work and safety equipment making sure they are maintained. Contributes to the development of vessel supplies budget covering all deck supplies, towing and safety equipment. Authorizes and monitors deck supplies and stores orderings. Conducts post-incident investigations and assessments, which may involve property damage and/or personal injury, to determine the root cause of an incident. Provides recommendations and action plans. Follows up to ensure corrective measures are put in place to prevent future incidents. Ensures personnel and gear readiness for emergency response. Acts as the Assistant Incident Commander during emergencies (sinkings, accidents, spills) and salvage response situations, which includes assisting the implementation of the Incident Commander System and the organization specialty equipment as required by the nature of the incident.

What you'll bring



Master, Near coastal/Chief Mate Certificate. Minimum 5 years of Shipboard or Marine Operations Management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International marine regulations. Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International marine regulations. Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and Occupational Safety and Health regulations. Knowledge of the marine industry on the West Coast of North America plus an understanding of West Coast Port and Terminal operations. Good communication and supervisory skills. Self-starter with the ability to work both alone and in a team environment. Strong problem-solving abilities. Ability to handle emergency response effectively and efficiently. Able to lead and perform under high pressure. Intermediate computer skills.

The estimated salary for this position is

$109,800 - $134,200

. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
