Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one (1) permanent, full-time position of Playground Technician in the Parks division of Parks & Recreation. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Playgrounds and Greenbelts, the Playground Technician is responsible for all aspects of playground maintenance and for the operation of all vehicles and equipment related to Playground and Parks maintenance. By working safely and cooperatively with others, the Playground Technicians are responsible to contribute to the achievement of operational objectives of the Parks division.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow the current Canadian Standards Association (CSA) guidelines and practices related to HRM playground equipment
  • Responsible for removal, installation, upgrading and inspection of playground structures, as required, including the construction/repair of various wooden structures and to perform repairs and mandatory maintenance
  • Responsible for all aspects of park-related maintenance as identified and/or directed
  • Work collaboratively with Supervisors and co-workers to discuss, recommend and action appropriate maintenance programs, practices and repairs to meet CSA guidelines
  • Complete and provide reports, order repair/replacement parts and track activities related to playgrounds and related park maintenance materials, as required
  • Report/record machinery malfunctions and maintenance requirements
  • Participation in Winter Works Snow and Ice Program; the approximate timeframe is November to April on a yearly basis
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Must be currently certified under the Canadian Playground Safety Inspector Certification Program (CPSI) in both theory and practical
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver\'s License
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
  • Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety standards and practices
  • Ability to operate hand tools used in playground removal, installation, upgrading, repairing and the inspection of playgrounds along with their use as related to parks maintenance
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of internal and external client needs
  • Ability to problem solve and make on-site decisions
  • Must be willing to participate in training for any of the equipment related to playground and park care maintenance (i.e. Utility tractors, Skid steer with applicable attachments, truck and trailer over 4500kg)
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time

HOURS OF WORK: Normal hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm for 40 hours per week; or other hours as per CUPE Local 108 Collective agreement Schedule B November 1,2017 - October 31, 2022

RATE OF PAY: $25.37 per hour as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement

WORK LOCATION: 11 Turner Drive, Dartmouth (Supervisor: Jack Murphy)
