About Our Opportunity

The Plant Protection Summer Student is responsible for landowner education, mapping of wild chervil sites and administering control of wild chervil infestations in the execution of a wild chervil management plan for agricultural marshlands in Nova Scotia. The Summer Student is also responsible for other pest management related activities respecting designated pests to agriculture in Nova Scotia.
Primary Accountabilities
----------------------------
work with a GIS database through collection of GPS spatial data and weed population information for planning and assessment of control strategies.
prevent the spread of noxious weeds on agricultural marshlands by applying effective mechanical and chemical control measures
increase awareness of landowners on impacts of noxious weeds and available control options through development of resources, consultation and demonstration; contribute to the development of control recommendations through the establishment, maintenance and assessment of research plots
supports industry protection initiatives by assisting the Plant Protection Coordinators with other pest management related activities.
Qualifications and Experience
---------------------------------
You must be a student currently registered in a relevant post-secondary program. The incumbent must have a valid Nova Scotia Pesticide Applicator Certificate of Qualification or be willing to complete the necessary requirements as well as a valid Driver's License.
Experience in Weed Science, Plant Science or a related field, plant identification skills, as well experience operating a tractor are considered assets.
