The building Maintenance Technician is a self-directed individual responsible for performing routine, preventive, and light-duty maintenance tasks to ensure the efficient operation of building systems and equipment. Key responsibilities include weekly checks on the ammonia system, water supply tanks, inventory cycle counts, and adherence to lubrication and gear oil replacement schedules for all drive systems. The technician supports the maintenance team, maintains compliance with safety and food manufacturing standards, and contributes to a clean and safe work environment. A mechanical background is preferred, as this role offers opportunities to gain hands-on experience and eventually perform minor supervised repairs on process and downstream equipment.

Key activities
Conduct routine inspections and perform preventive maintenance on facility systems, including HVAC, boilers, air compressors, ammonia compressors, water systems, and electrical panels.
Operate and maintain equipment requiring a Class 5 Power Engineer certification, such as low-pressure steam boilers and associated utilities.
Respond promptly to maintenance work orders and emergency breakdowns affecting building infrastructure.
Ensure strict compliance with food safety, occupational health and safety, and environmental regulations (e.g., CFIA, AHS, GMP, HACCP).
Monitor and maintain facility cleanliness, sanitation systems, and pest control in collaboration with the Quality Assurance team.
Accurately document maintenance activities and utility performance using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or maintenance logs.
Proactively identify aging or obsolete equipment and escalate issues to the appropriate personnel.
Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and fellow technicians on facility upgrades, repairs, and inspections.
Perform minor repairs in carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical systems as needed.
Participate in safety audits, inspections, and hazard assessments to support a safe working environment.
Contribute to energy management initiatives and support continuous improvement efforts across maintenance operations.
Required training and experience
High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in facility maintenance, preferably within a food or beverage manufacturing environment.
Forklift operation experience is required.
Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act as it relates to equipment operation.
Skilled in using hand tools and small power tools for minor repairs.
Working knowledge of cutting and welding equipment.
