About the job:
Kent is looking for a Piping Designer / 3D Scanner to support our client's Sarnia manufacturing and energy assets. This role is seconded directly to our client and will be based on-site in Sarnia, supporting brownfield and operational projects through high-accuracy 3D laser scanning, point-cloud modeling, and piping layout verification. You will play a key role in ensuring that field conditions, existing piping, and equipment are accurately captured and integrated into 2D and 3D design models, supporting safe, efficient, and constructible project execution. This position bridges field data acquisition, digital engineering, and piping design, enabling our client to execute modifications and upgrades with confidence.
Skills and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities
3D Modeling & Piping Support
Develop and modify 2D and 3D piping designs using AutoCAD Plant 3D, Aveva E3D, Navisworks, or similar
Convert laser scan point clouds into intelligent 3D models
Create as-built and new design-basis models of piping, structures, and equipment
Interpret P&IDs, piping specifications, and equipment layouts to produce accurate designs
Prepare isometric drawings, layouts, material take-offs (MTOs), and fabrication drawings
Support other designers and engineers by providing verified field geometry
Identify and resolve clashes, interferences, and constructability issues
Participate in design and model reviews and incorporate feedback
Laser Scanning & Reality Capture
Perform 3D laser scanning of piping systems, pipe racks, vessels, and process units
Register, process, and manage point-cloud datasets
Conduct and process laser scanning activities using client equipment and software
Ensure field data is captured safely, accurately, and in accordance with HSSE standards
Coordinate scan plans with operations, maintenance, and project teams
Engineering & Project Integration
Support brownfield modifications, revamps, and tie-ins
Verify existing piping routing, supports, and equipment interfaces
Assist with isometric extraction, layout development, and model reviews
Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other designers to ensure designs meet project requirements
Coordinate with work-share partners to maintain continuity, document progress, and ensure smooth workflow transitions
Site & Client Interaction
Work daily on-site at the client's Sarnia facility
Conduct field visits to assess existing conditions and support project execution
Coordinate with operations for scanning access and safe work execution
Provide technical input to client stakeholders and Kent engineering teams

Your knowledge/skills, education and experience:
Knowledge / Qualification / Training / Certification
Minimum 5 years of experience in piping design, 3D laser scanning, or plant modeling
Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Process Piping Design, Engineering, or a related field
Hands-on experience with laser scanning hardware and point-cloud software
Experience working in industrial plants, refineries, chemical, or energy facilities
Strong understanding of piping layouts, equipment, and plant infrastructure
Experience with Leica
Experience with Cyclone, ReCap, or equivalent
Proficiency in AutoCAD Plant 3D, Navisworks, or similar
Strong understanding of ASME, ANSI, and applicable piping codes and standards
Experience with field verification and as-built documentation is an asset
Comfortable working in a field environment, including climbing and working at heights
Communication
Strong English communication skills, written and verbal
Able to clearly explain field conditions and model findings to engineers, designers, and site teams
