Pipe welders use specialized knowledge to weld piping systems for marine vessels. They will mainly use welding equipment and will ensure that the welds pass inspections according to established standards (e.g. quality, structural soundness). Projects include ship repairs, new builds, and custom refits.
Responsibilities:
Weld carbon steel pipes in all positions on vessels
Read and follow weld procedures (WPS)
Read and interpret pipe and pressure vessel drawings and specifications
Operate manual and semi-automatic welders to fabricate piping systems
Operate manual and semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment
Repair and maintain pipe systems and components; breaks, leaks, obstructions, cracks, holes
Maintain and develop working knowledge of various welding techniques and materials
Set up, take down, and maintain welding equipment
Other duties as required
Qualifications & Experience:
Ability to weld pipe using SMAW and GTAW processes
+ Welders will need to complete ABS welding certifications if hired Other TSSA or CWB welding certifications with carbon or stainless alloys considered an asset
Minimum 3-5 years welding experience (emphasis on stick welding & fitting), with ability to operate manual and semi-automatic Stick, Flux-Core, MIG and TIG welders
Experience welding pipe all position, 6G etc.
Knowledge of specific welding hazards to protect self and others
Ability to correctly and safely work with hand and power tools, steel/stainless steel, pipes, and other related materials;
Should possess pipe welding tools and equipment
Ability to read and interpret pipe and pressure vessel drawings and specifications
Ability to read and follow welding instructions (WPS)
Ability to work at heights using scaffolding, man lifts, ladders etc.
Ability to work in confined spaces
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round (cold, heat, wind, rain, snow, etc.)
