Hydrogen in Motion (H2M) is a clean energy technology company developing advanced solid-state hydrogen storage materials and systems. Our work combines materials science, chemical processing, and engineering to enable safer and more efficient hydrogen storage for transportation and energy applications. Our pilot plant is located in Burnaby, BC, where we scale novel hydrogen storage materials from lab-scale development toward real-world deployment. The pilot plant supports process development, feed studies, and system integration, playing a key role in our path toward commercialization.

Job Summary



We are seeking a skilled and motivated Pilot Plant Technician to support the ongoing operation, monitoring, continued commissioning, and ongoing optimization of a chemical pilot plant. The successful candidate will be responsible for day-to-day plant operations, SOP execution, hands-on mechanical work, equipment monitoring, and documentation, while working closely with engineering and process teams on optimization, trials, and incremental system improvements. This role is critical to maintaining safe and consistent pilot plant operations and to bridging laboratory innovation and commercial deployment through repeatable pilot-scale execution.

Key Responsibilities



Pilot Plant Operations



Operate pilot plant systems on a routine basis following established SOPs Support commissioning, integration, and testing of new or modified equipment Monitor process parameters, alarms, and overall system performance Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor corrective maintenance on pilot-scale equipment (pumps, valves, seals, fittings, sensors, etc.). Assemble, modify, and maintain pilot-scale piping, fittings, and mechanical components Use hand tools to support equipment installation, adjustments, and repairs Identify abnormal conditions and escalate issues as required

Troubleshooting & Process Support



Monitor and track chemical processes to ensure safe, stable, and efficient operation Troubleshoot mechanical, equipment, instrumentation, and process-related issues Support mechanical and process troubleshooting during commissioning and routine operation Work with engineering and R&D teams to resolve recurring or complex issues Support experimental trials, feed studies, and process testing (e.g., controlled variation of inputs and operating conditions).

Documentation, SOPs & Reporting



Follow existing SOPs and contribute to SOP updates and new procedure development Maintain accurate operational logs, maintenance records, and run reports Document deviations, incidents, and operational observations clearly and consistently

Safety



Follow all safety procedures and PPE requirements Support safety audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance Communicate operational status and issues clearly to relevant teams Promote a strong safety culture within the pilot plant environment Handle, transfer, and prepare process chemicals in accordance with SOPs and safety protocols

Qualifications & Skills



Background



High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or certification preferred Eligible to work in Canada for a minimum of one year at the time of hire Experience working in a chemical, industrial, or pilot-scale processing environment with routine equipment operation responsibilities Hands-on experience with process and mechanical equipment, including piping, pumps, valves, reactors, and instrumentation Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively use hand tools in a working environment (e.g., assembly, maintenance, equipment installation, or repair) Comfortable assembling, modifying, and repairing pilot-scale equipment Strong mechanical, equipment, and process troubleshooting skills Knowledge of chemical safety requirements and industrial best practices Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures precisely Clear written and verbal communication skills Able to work independently during routine operations with appropriate escalation

Physical Requirements



Ability to lift and carry equipment or materials up to 50 pounds. Comfortable wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, chemical suits, and safety shoes.

Nice-to-Have Experience (Assets)



Experience specifically in pilot or demonstration plants, beyond general industrial operations Familiarity with equipment commissioning, system modifications, or re-configuration activities Experience supporting process development, experimental trials, or scale-up environments Exposure to hydrogen, energy systems, or advanced materials processing
Forklift experience is an asset

Salary Range:

$60,000 - $70,000, commensurate with experience
