New Society Institute is looking for a Part-Time PHP-Laravel Developer for a 1 year Contract

focused on the issues impacting Indigenous, Black, racialized, immigrant and refugee, Deaf, and 2SLGBTQAI+ people with and without disabilities

The New Society Institute (NSI) is a non-profit research, design, and social development organization that partners with systemically marginalized communities to create systems that serve their needs. We work to move voices from the edges to the centre -- supporting equality and inclusion across all sectors.

NSI manages The Accessibility Exchange (TAE) -- an evolving, interactive digital platform that connects members of Deaf and disabled communities and their supporters, with federally regulated organizations. Together, they work on accessibility projects, as required by the Accessible Canada Act.

We are deeply committed to accessibility, inclusion, and continuous improvement. As we enhance and expand our platform, we are looking for a skilled and mission-driven PHP-Laravel Developer to join our team.

We're hiring a Part-Time PHP-Laravel Developer to help us maintain, develop, and improve The Accessibility Exchange platform. You'll be responsible for understanding and building upon existing code, developing new features, maintaining accessibility compliance (WCAG), and ensuring the platform is user-friendly for people with disabilities and Deaf users in multiple languages.

Duties and Responsibilities



Lead and implement the development of scalable, efficient PHP-Laravel applications for TAE Develop new features and improve or maintain existing ones Ensure all features meet accessibility standards (WCAG 2.0, 2.1, 2.2) Conduct thorough QA testing and resolve bugs and performance bottlenecks Maintain and deploy code across dev, staging, and production environments in 4 languages: English, French, ASL, and LSQ Collaborate with external third-party service providers Collaborate with internal team members and advisors from the disability and Deaf communities Stay current with software development best practices and emerging technologies Clearly communicate technical updates to non-technical stakeholders

Required Qualifications



5+ years of hands-on PHP development experience Strong experience with the Laravel framework Ability to read, understand, and build upon existing codebases Experience integrating or maintaining WCAG-compliant features Solid understanding of QA, debugging, and the full software development lifecycle Familiarity with web infrastructure (DNS, SSL, hosting, etc.) Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail Ability to work independently and meet deadlines Excellent verbal and written communication skills Legally eligible to work in Canada

Preferred Qualifications



Experience with Kubernetes (pods, nodes, clusters) Familiarity with tools such as GitHub, Postmark, Flareapp, Crowdin, Vimeo, etc. Knowledge of modern Laravel ecosystems and frameworks Basic French language skills a plus Experience with accessible development/design is an asset Understanding of how marginalized social statuses intersect with disability resulting in multiple barriers to inclusion in society.
