PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Sul'hween Program and Nursing Manager, the Personal Care Worker is responsible to provide personal care assistance, homemaking and support the Cowichan Tribe Elders program participants and their families/caregivers to promote and maximize independence within the home and community setting, including assistance with activities of daily living and delegated tasks as directed and in accordance with established care plans. Two (2) full-time, 35 hour per week, permanent unionized positions are available that will work primarily off-site with extensive local travel and work on-site as required. Regular working hours vary between 7:30 AM - 8:30 PM Monday to Friday.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

: Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $25.15 - 26.67 per hour ($45,765.31 - $48,538.31 annually).

RESPONSIBILITIES:



oAssist with medication delivery as per individual's care plan

oProvide personal care services program participants according to their care plan

oAssist program participants in bathing and personal hygiene tasks

oPrepare meals for clients as per their dietary needs

oProvide general home making services according to the client's care plan which may include but not inclusive to laundry, dusting, general cleaning, vacuuming, washing floors and kitchen as required

oAssist program participants to engage in social activities when required

oSupport participation in program activities and events

oReport any client health concerns or issues immediately to supervisor

oDevelop and maintain effective relationships with program participants and their families, and members of the interdisciplinary health care team

oEnsure proper personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols are taken when providing care

oAttend Elders Program team meetings as required

oBe aware of internal/external resources, such as Ts'ewulhtun Health Center programs and services, physicians, community partners and services, and communicate to program participants or refer to appropriate member of the health care team as appropriate

oConsult with the Elders Nurses and/or the Elders Program Manager regarding clients and services throughout scheduled shift as needed

oEnsure accurate record management and communications

oPromote safety of self and others with self-check ins before and after visits, and report any safety concerns to appropriate team members and supervisor

oOther related duties as directed

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)



oHealth Care Assistant Program certification, or equivalent is required

o1 year health care assistant/personal care worker experience is required

oRegistration in good standing with BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry is required

oExperience working in a First Nations community is preferred

oCertification in First Aid level 1 / CPR C/ FoodSafe

oClass 5 BC Drivers' License, drivers abstract and reliable vehicle is required

oSatisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check is required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



oAbility to work a flexible schedule as needed between 7:30 AM - 8:30 PM Monday to Friday

oAbility to foster and build relationships within an Aboriginal population

oKnowledge of Cowichan culture, customs, and traditions or willingness to learn

oKnowledge of health issues that face First Nations peoples

oKnowledge of proper cleaning procedures and products

oWell-developed written, oral, interpersonal and organizational skills

oTime management with the ability to multitask different tasks simultaneously

oPhysically able to perform duties of the job which require stamina - able to perform repetitive tasks, lift, squat, bend and other physical duties required for housekeeping as needed

oAble to operate related equipment such as mechanical tub
