Chinook Feeders (2024) is currently looking for four (4) dedicated and skilled Pen Checkers to join our team.
Position Overview:
This role involves daily monitoring and care of cattle within our feedlot, ensuring their health and well-being through proactive observation and treatment. The ideal candidate will possess strong horsemanship skills, a keen eye for animal health, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
Daily Pen Inspections:
Ride assigned pens to observe cattle for signs of illness, injury, or distress.
Animal Treatment:
Administer medications and treatments as per veterinary protocols; segregate and transport sick or injured cattle to hospital pens.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate digital records of cattle health, treatments, and procedures.
Feeding and Watering:
Ensure cattle have access to clean water and quality feed; assist with feeding and bedding as needed.
Facility Maintenance:
Inspect and report on pen conditions, including fencing, water systems, and feed bunks; assist with repairs and upkeep.
Cattle Movement:
Safely move cattle between pens using low-stress handling techniques; assist with sorting and shipping activities.
Equipment Operation:
Operate farm equipment such as forklifts, front-end loaders, and tractors; ensure equipment is maintained and in good working condition.
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with fellow Pen Checkers, veterinarians, and feedlot staff to ensure efficient operations and high standards of animal care.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in livestock handling or a related field.
Strong horsemanship skills; ability to ride and care for horses used in pen checking duties.
Knowledge of cattle health indicators and common diseases in a feedlot setting.
Ability to operate and maintain farm equipment.
Valid Class 5 driver's license.
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Physical stamina to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
Physically demanding tasks requiring lifting, walking, and riding.
Rotation of shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed.
