Department summary University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS), is seeking service-oriented professionals to join our team in the role of Peace Officer. Peace officers receive initial and ongoing in-service training and have the opportunity to participate in a number of assignments. Officers may also elect to work additional hours for functions and events. The successful applicants must be eligible for a Community Level One Peace Officer appointment from the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Public Security Peace Officer Program, and complete selection and training requirements. Please note that this position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays. Peace Officers have the opportunity to access to a variety of educational and personal development programs including recreational and fitness facilities. Duties
Reporting to a Sergeant of the Patrol Services Division, performs proactive foot, vehicle and bike patrols of five campuses including Campus Residences to enhance safety/security and develop positive contacts in a uniquely diverse community
Responds to Incidents of emergency, criminal/provincial/UofA offences, general complaints, calls for service and crime prevention. Examples include medical emergencies, crisis intervention, fire alarms, missing persons, reports of disturbance, intoxicated persons, suspicious persons, trespassing, break and enter, theft, mischief, escorts, emergency notifications, special event security, property control, security surveys, building/room access, etc.
Exercises discretionary enforcement authority under numerous Provincial statutes and University policy; serves legal documents
Assists community members through various supports such as, education, referrals to social services, mental health supports, community assistance and/or discretionary enforcement in response to criminal activity and disorder
Conducts general complaint investigation; gathers and secures evidence, compiles reports
Administers/coordinates/contributes to departmental, community oriented and crime prevention programs such as delivery of seminars to students and staff on crime prevention/awareness, special projects
Liaises with other law enforcement and first responder agencies, may assist department and faculties with academic investigations
Investigates and prepares preliminary investigation reports, may assist department and faculties with academic investigations
Provides testimony in a court of law and University hearings
Processes found and evidentiary property
Provides dispatch, administrative and support duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum High School Diploma by Alberta Education standards (or equivalent); diploma/degree program in Law Enforcement/Security or related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Ability to work a variety of 12-hour shifts including days, overnight, weekends, and statutory holidays
Possess a current Standard First Aid Certification and Level C CPR with AED
Valid driver\'s license (Alberta Class 5 or equivalent, non-GDL)
Experience with Microsoft Windows and Google Applications
Applicants must be eligible for a Community Peace Officer I Appointment through Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security by meeting the minimum qualifications:
Minimum age of 18 years old
Competent and of good character
Canadian citizenship or legal permanent residence
No criminal record, or if the person has a criminal record that a pardon has been received
No outstanding criminal charges and not subject of a criminal investigation
Preferred Qualifications
Diploma/degree program in Law Enforcement/Security or related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Knowledge of the University of Alberta community is an asset
Enforcement/Security work experience or related field
Preference may be given to those with previous Police or Peace Officer experience
Short-listed candidates must submit/undergo:
Certified copies of High School and/or Post-Secondary transcripts
A recent clear driver\'s abstract demonstrating a good driving record with no more than four demerits; Out of Province drivers must provide a 3-year abstract from the licensing authority
Reference checks, background checks and complete of a Personal Disclosure Form (PDF).
A recent Certified Criminal Record Verification that includes fingerprint submissions; a criminal pardon, if applicable
PARE (Physical Abilities Required Examination) testing
Psychological evaluation
Vision and color-blindness, hearing, and medical testing
If offered employment, and not subject to exemption, must successfully complete Community Peace Officer Induction Program and obtain Peace Officer status
