What you will do
The Payroll Manager ensures accurate and timely payment of employee salaries and wages, while adhering to all relevant laws and regulations. This includes collecting and verifying payroll data, calculating compensation, preparing payment statements, and maintaining accurate records.
Additionally, the Payroll Manager will be hands-on payroll processing with team leadership, focusing on accurate, timely employee payments, ensuring legal compliance (tax, wage/hour), managing payroll systems (like ADP, ), handling deductions/benefits, resolving complex issues, and collaborating with HR/Finance, all while training staff and improving processes for efficiency and accuracy
A Day in the Life
Reporting to the
Finance Manager
, your job duties include:
Payroll Operations:
Oversee the entire payroll cycle (salaries, wages, bonuses, deductions), ensuring accuracy and timely payments for all employees, across different jurisdictions.
Compliance & Reporting:
Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local laws (tax, wage & hour, data privacy), manage tax filings, and prepare for audits.
Collaboration:
Work closely with HR and Finance on budgets, policy alignment, compensation, and cross-functional projects.
Process Improvement:
Identify and implement new technologies, procedures, and internal controls for better efficiency and accuracy.
Team Leadership:
Recruit, train, schedule, mentor, and provide guidance to payroll staff, fostering a high-performance, deadline-driven environment.
Process payroll accurately within tight timelines (transmit and receive payroll data files).
Preparing year-end employee tax slips or forms and submitting government filings to meet deadlines
Monitoring and analyzing expenses against the benefits budget to help prepare cost forecasts and budgets
Processes payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
Input employee information into the payroll system, issue vacation pay, and termination pay.
Reconcile payroll General Ledger Accounts.
Prepare weekly payroll journal entries.
Prepare payroll related filings and supporting documentation, such as year-end tax statements, pension, Records of Employment, and other statements.
Complete various monthly government reports, remittances and prepare management reports and analysis.
Assist external auditors during the year end and/or during the interim audit.
Provide back-up services for other financial staff.
Perform other related duties.
Working Conditions and Effort
The incumbent may be required to:
Work additional hours outside of the regular hours of work, including weekends and overtime.
Travel within the NWT and Canada on occasion.
Work in a stressful environment with minimal supervision.
What You Bring
The successful candidate, will have obtained the following education and /or experience:
Payroll administration certification such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) or comparable.
Diploma/bachelor's degree in business administration or accounting and finance.
Previous work experience as a Payroll Administrator or similar role would be an asset.
Deep understanding of tax and labor laws and regulations.
Able to perform complex calculations such as financial compensation in salary/addition of bonus/tax deductions etc.
Proficient computer skills and knowledge of HRIS, Payroll software such as ADP to maintain records.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work as a team member.
Experience working in a multicultural environment.
Familiarity with Yellowknives Dene language, culture and way of life would be highly beneficial.
