Job Overview:



APTIM is currently seeking a Payroll Manager to support our Canadian operations. Reporting to the Director of Accounting, the Payroll Manager is accountable for the delivery of full-cycle payroll services for all our Canadian employees. This includes oversight of payroll, timekeeping, and related accounting and remittances for union and non-union employees on large industrial projects in jurisdictions across Canada. The Payroll Manager also leads and develops a team of payroll and timekeeping specialists and ensures compliance with Employment Standards legislation, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and related payroll and tax regulations. This role will be remote with the option to work from any of our Canadian offices (Sherwood Park, AB, and Fort McMurray, AB).

Key Responsibilities:



Provide leadership to the payroll team and oversee day-to-day effectiveness of staff. Manage full-cycle payroll, ensuring pay for employees is accurate and on time. Accountable for accuracy and timeliness of related remittances for payroll taxes, WCB installments, garnishments, union benefits, etc. Ensure that internal payroll policies and procedures meet the requirements of provincial and federal regulations and collective agreements. Drive process improvement and implementation of new technology to ensure overall efficiency and effectiveness of payroll team. Supervise, coach and mentor the team; maintain positive interpersonal relationships while ensuring that recommendations are aligned with the goals of the organization. Lead payroll team to execute year end related activities: updating taxable benefits, producing T4's, T2200's, and all other year-end reporting. Review of payroll procedures to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and internal controls of the payroll operation. Collaborate with internal departments to ensure that their operational and informational requirements related to payroll are met in a timely fashion. Accountable for accurate labour cost accounting and distribution; including related fringes, reconciliations, and regular reporting of these costs to the appropriate parties. Participates in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting activities related to labour cost accounting. Develops standard and custom reports for payroll data analysis. Maintain confidentiality of payroll information in alignment with privacy legislation and internal controls.

Minimum Requirements:



3-5 years of experience in a similar role. CPM Designation. Experience with Building Trades Union collective bargaining agreements. Experience with large construction, maintenance, or industrial projects. Microsoft Office Tools - proficient with excel, formulas, pivot tables, macros. Significant project cost accounting experience. Previous experience managing employees. Comfortable dealing with confidential information. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Self-Starter with strong ethical standards. Creative problem solver, solutions focused. Team player, works collaboratively with colleagues in other departments on cross-functional projects and process improvements. Willing to take on responsibilities outside of normal day to day functions as needs arise. Ability to work overtime on an as needed basis during peak seasonal periods.
