The Patient Care Manager (PCM) provides operational leadership for nursing administration and overall patient care. Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), this role promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and drives initiatives that enhance safety, efficiency, and patient experience. The PCM ensures evidence-based practice, alignment with the MICs Group of Health Services' mission and values, and consistent quality across emergency, inpatient, hospice, and outpatient services.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Operating in a full-time, non-union capacity, the position is based at Anson General Hospital (AGH) in Iroquois Falls, Ontario. The PCM works within a multidisciplinary leadership team to oversee emergency, inpatient, hospice, outpatient, and specialty clinic services. Responsibilities include supervising nursing and support staff, coordinating with internal departments and community partners, and ensuring standards of practice, safety, and regulatory compliance are maintained. The PCM manages resources and budgets, develops and implements clinical service and strategic plans for assigned areas, enhances community linkages to support patients and families, participates in the administration on-call rotation, and supports care delivery across acute and related services, including programs such as Telehealth, Endoscopy, and Visiting Specialist Clinics.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision and Leadership
Make effective decisions using analysis, experience, and sound judgment
Provide collaborative leadership that promotes shared decision-making, professional autonomy, and staff ownership of decisions
Foster a culture of accountability, excellence, and engagement through transparent communication and timely performance updates
Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage workplace conflicts effectively
Promote continuity of care within AGH and assist the CNO in coordinating between the facility, the community, and external agencies
Define, monitor, and ensure standards of practice are maintained, while ensuring functioning technology and adequate supplies
Support a continuous learning culture by ensuring staff education is completed and documented in collaboration with the MICs Education Lead
Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of clinical areas
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
Commit to continuous process improvement (e.g., PDSA, LEAN) to evaluate and enhance the quality of care and patient flow
Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by adhering to regulatory and accreditation standards, policies, and procedures
Identify initiatives and opportunities to continuously improve the patient and family experience
Interpret and communicate policies, procedures, and regulations clearly to direct reports
Staffing, Labour Relations, and Policy Oversight
Assist with recruitment and hiring--conduct interviews with HR and maintain the appropriate mix of nursing support staff within budget
Keep all position descriptions current
Contribute to MICs-wide policy and protocol development related to patient care in collaboration with nursing leadership and administration
Manage all aspects of employee relations, including performance management, coaching/mentoring, and professional development
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Licensure
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from an accredited school of nursing
Master's degree in Nursing or Health Administration is preferred
Must be registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
Three to five years of progressive nursing or leadership experience
Proven leadership and management experience, including staff supervision and operational oversight
Skills & Experience
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
Strong knowledge of clinical procedures, standards, quality control, and principles of patient/resident care
Proficient in reading and interpreting professional standards, safety rules, manuals, and regulations, and skilled in preparing clear reports, correspondence, and policies
Effective communicator--able to present information, respond to questions, and build rapport with colleagues, patients/residents, and the public through meetings, presentations, and written or electronic correspondence
Ability to remain calm, analyze situations, and make sound decisions in emergencies
Proficient computer user, including Microsoft Office Suite, email systems, electronic medical records, and web-based programs, and experience managing departmental budgets
