Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The Sessional Instructor will teach Law and Policy for Resource and Environmental Management (ENVI 5205 cross-listed for senior undergraduates as MGMT 4205) in the 2023/24 winter term. This is a required course for all Master of Resource and Environmental Management (MREM) students but is open to other graduate students and a limited number of senior undergraduates. The calendar entry is as follows: \xe2\x80\x9cThis course provides students with an overview of substantive and procedural aspects of Canadian law and policy related to natural resources and the environment. The course will involve lectures, guest speakers, seminar discussions and class participation. Strong emphasis is placed on the Canadian legislative and regulatory framework and the unique character of the regulated subject areas such as toxic substances, air and water quality, fisheries, forests, agriculture, minerals, parks, and biodiversity. The role of the common law in preventing or redressing environmental degradation will also be addressed.\xe2\x80\x9d

The organization of the course is flexible but for those students enrolled in the MREM Program, a substantial portion of the student\'s final grade must be based on group work that span this and two other courses (socio-political and biophysical dimensions of resource and environmental management) that are taken simultaneously. Coordination with the instructors of these other two courses on points of intersection is essential.

There is a course syllabus in place for this course, although modifications may be made by the successful candidate. The successful candidate will also be able to call upon the regular course instructor for guidance, course assignments, teaching materials, and support in the organization and delivery.

The Sessional Instructor will be responsible for lectures, organization of guest speakers, discussions, office hour consultations, and grading. The winter course is scheduled for one 3-hour class per week that is scheduled to be held on Thursdays, 14:35-17:25.
