The Opportunity
Reporting to the Parks and Transportation Supervisor and Lead Hand, the Operator III has sound knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment applicable to maintenance of the City's infrastructure assets, such as road maintenance, signal maintenance, snow and ice control, storm water maintenance, parks and open spaces maintenance, and cemetery maintenance. The Operator III is a senior level position that is responsible for leading crews while completing job tasks, providing guidance and training to junior level personnel, supporting the Lead Hand and ensuring Occupational Health and Safety processes and procedures are being followed.
Responsibilities
Operate heavy and medium equipment used in the maintenance of streets, storm sewers, snow and ice control, parks and open spaces, cemeteries, and other public works functions.
Provide advanced knowledge in relation to operation and maintenance requirements on municipal infrastructure systems.
Provide guidance and training to junior personnel.
Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety processes and procedures, including completing and reviewing Field Level Hazard Assessments, Formal Hazard Assessments, Safe Work Procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures.
Perform manual labour as required such as shoveling, lifting heavy objects, grass trimming etc.
Undertake preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and operation of equipment.
Assume on-call or standby duties on a rotational basis.
Record Keep through existing paper processes and future transition to digital platform.
Maintain positive public image through excellent customer service and communication.
Other duties as assigned. Work assignments depend on the season and may vary.
Education, Qualifications and Work Experience
High School Diploma or GED.
2 years of relevant experience in Transportation or Parks operations, operating relevant equipment. Previous municipal experience is considered an asset.
Possess and retain a valid Class 3Q Alberta Drivers license with clean abstract.
Leadership in Safety Excellence (AMSHA).
Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.
Standard First Aid and CPR, Temporary Work Zone Safety, Ground Disturbance Safety Training Level 1, WHIMIS, Fall Arrest, IMSA Traffic Signal Tech 1, Work Zone Safety Tech, Fall Arrest and defensive driving certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of OH&S regulations and corporate safe work practices, and the desire to contribute to a positive safety culture by adhering to all safety standards under OH&S and by compliance with all safe work practices, policies, directives, and procedures.
A willingness to maintain and increase certifications.
Be part of an on-call roster on a rotational basis (every 10-12 weeks). Evening and weekend work may be required.
Strong equipment operating and maintenance skills.
Basic computer knowledge.
Meet physical requirements, lifting of heavy goods and equipment up to 50lbs, standing and sitting for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, twisting etc., and working in all weather conditions.
Ability to provide a clear criminal record check.
Ability to provide a driver's abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behavior.
