Job Description

This position works in the Parks - Design organizational unit. This is professional park planning work involving responsibility for the preparation of development plans, designs and specifications for new and existing parks and recreation facilities and the provision of advice relative to a variety of park planning and related environmental matters. The incumbent oversees the planning and design of all new parklands and redevelopment of existing parklands and facilities and directing the work of consultants. The work involves preparing cost estimates, budget requirements, and recommendations on a variety of park and related issues, maintaining liaison between departments, consultants and other internal and external contacts, and representing the department at various internal and external meetings. The incumbent exercises considerable independence of judgement and action within the framework of departmental policies, regulations and budget constraints. Work is performed under administrative direction of a supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of attainment of desired objectives and conformance to established policies and procedures. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include university graduation in Landscape Architecture or related discipline, plus considerable related experience, preferably courses in environmental science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of landscape design principles and practices, construction methods, materials and horticultural techniques. Sound knowledge of the policies, procedures, and by-laws and procedures applicable to municipal planning. An incumbent will have the ability to develop conceptual plans, prepare and oversee preparation of detailed specifications for park and public open space developments; develop and monitor budgets; manage consultants and contracts; organize and conduct public interest group meetings, prepare graphic presentations, resolve conflicting demands, read and interpret engineering, architectural and landscape architectural plans and the skill in the use of drafting and graphic arts tools and equipment. A Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia, and Registration or eligibility for registration in the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects are required.
