ABOUT US:

Onion Lake Family Services is an organization that strengthens family units by offering support and resources to parents and caregivers, aiming for healthy homes. Our short-term, strength based services focus on empowering families for long term improvement and skill building.

Roles and Responsibilities


Onion Lake Family Services supports families by collaborating with our community and elders to assist our children, youth, and families. The Parent Mentor will work closely with families and the community to ensure positive outcomes for children of Onion Lake Cree Nation. This role will provide home services to families as needed.

Modelling and teaching respectful communication and listening skills

Promote an environment that supports and nurtures the well-being of children and families.

Provide parenting skills training, role modeling, educational activities, and alternatives to physical discipline

Provide training for budget assistance, meal preparation and household management tasks.

Transport children and families as required to access services.

Provide in home assistance to families as required.

Assist families to increase protective factors and decrease risk factors in their environment.

Work with families to plan and implement strategies to resolve their issues.

Help families identify their strengths and coping mechanisms in order to meet the goals defined by the family.

Participates in case conferences and family circles.

Identifies, documents and reports the Family Services Worker physical, emotional and behavioral indicators of abuse, neglect and emotional injury.

Reports family progress to the Family Services Worker through required paperwork.

Legal and procedural requirements are completed.

Adhere to all OLFS policies and procedures

Other duties that are complimentary to role of Parent Mentor.

Qualifications and Education


Certificate or Diploma in Human Services.

One year of working with families.

Valid Class 5 driver's license with acceptable abstract.

Clear criminal record with vulnerable sector.

Combined education and experience will be considered.

Ability to speak Cree is an asset.

Competencies:



Knowledge of First Nations Child and Family Services. Understanding of the Cree language and the historical information as it relates to working with children and families Understanding of the historical significance of residential schools and how it relates to OLCN Basic computer knowledge (Microsoft programs) Work under pressure and stress situations Strong principles and ethics Work under pressure and stressful situations Attention to detail Excellent organizational and time management skills Physical ability to lift up-to 20lbs
