Job Description

The Centre for Health and Community Research (CHCR) at the University of Prince Edward Island is seeking applications for the position of Secure Island Data Repository (SIDR) Database Administrator. SIDR is a provincial data facility which holds province-wide administrative health data and other research data in a controlled research environment. The purpose of SIDR is to facilitate access and storage of privacy-protected health-related data for research purposes. The primary responsibilities of the successful applicant are the management, manipulation, and analysis of SIDR data holdings and research-produced data.

Reporting to the SIDR Manager, the SIDR Database Administrator will have the primary responsibility for receiving, extracting, preparing, and storing data into the SIDR repository. The SIDR Database Administrator will also be responsible for providing services to researchers by creating project data sets, performing statistical analysis, and vetting project results when requested. The successful candidate will be an adaptable team player, with excellent data analysis/data management, organizational, and communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and manage databases for housing research data
  • Receive, check, and load data onto the SIDR servers
  • Perform data checks to ensure the integrity and validity of SIDR data holdings
  • Perform data vetting prior to release of research findings outside the secure environment
  • Assist researchers or agencies in preparing data for storage into the SIDR repository
  • Perform data manipulation of large administrative databases
  • Perform linking of large administrative databases
  • Oversee SIDR user access permissions
  • Conduct SIDR orientation and training for new data users
  • Conduct analysis of administrative health databases using statistical software (e.g. SAS, Stata, R).
  • Assist with the publication and presentation of research findings
  • Other related duties as required
  • Participation in relevant working groups within the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit and SPOR Canadian Data Platform
  • Comply with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures pertaining to the use of administrative and research data
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary program in a related area (e.g. Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Data Analytics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology) and minimum of 2 years of work experience. A graduate degree would be considered a strong asset
  • Experience working with and creating databases
  • Experience using or maintaining data management platforms such as Microsoft SharePoint. Proficiency in programming languages (e.g. .NET, JavaScript, HTML) would be considered an asset
  • Experience with data extraction, manipulation, and linkage
  • Experience using statistical software and writing syntax for such programs (SAS and/or Stata strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new statistical software programs as required
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic statistical analysis techniques. Advanced statistical analysis experience would be considered an asset
  • Experience working in a research environment would be considered an asset
  • Experience creating and maintaining records management systems would be a strong asset
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others in a respectful and collaborative manner
  • Knowledge of administrative health databases including their content, structure and limitations would be a strong asset
