The Extreme Weather Overnight Warming Centre Attendant (OWCA) is responsible for
the service delivery of the day-to-day operations of The Overnight Warming Centre
(OWC). They will provide support to guests accessing the Overnight Warming Centre in
the town of Bradford which is operated by The Bradford Out of The Cold Cafe (OOCC)
in conjunction with non-profit partners. The OWC will operate nightly from 8 PM to 9 AM
from December 1st 2025 - March 31 2026.
The OWCA role works overnight to help with maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming
environment for individuals to access indoor warming spaces. The OWC operates as a
life saving measure for the purpose of providing shelter to marginalized populations who
are experiencing homelessness and may also live with challenges related to substance
use, mental health, physical and/or cognitive disabilities and other issues related to
poverty and marginalization.
This front-line position carries out a variety of duties in a calm professional manner,
supporting guests with basic needs, including shelter and food. The OWCA will assist
guests with referrals to other services when appropriate. Service delivery will include the
monitoring of guest behaviour, incident response, crisis management, and response
with de-escalation methods to ensure a safe and secure environment for all guests.
The position is responsible for monitoring centre access, enforcing policies and
procedures, performing routine janitorial duties, assisting guests with laundry services
and shower access as well as supporting guests and maintaining records and reports
including incident reports and guest attendance reports as required, and engaging with
guests to provide feedback as requested.
OWCA will be required to work between 30-40 hours/week.
Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships
The OWCA reports to the Overnight Warming Centre Coordinator and communicates
regularly with the Resource Coordinator. The OWCA will work closely with community
partners. The EWOWCA also will have regular contact with external service providers
and agencies such as: S.H.I.F.T., CONTACT Community Services, and South Simcoe
Emergency 911 Services including Police, Fire, and Ambulance.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Set-up and take down of/warming centre operations at the beginning and end of
the night.
Problem-solving
Liaising with other organizations or stakeholders as needed.
Maintains a safe, healthy, and positive environment
Ability to create a warm and welcoming environment that is sensitive to the
needs of the marginalized population served.
Works tactfully and compassionately with individuals who may use substances
and/or be isolated through poverty, homelessness, mental illness, or other factors
of social exclusion.
Exhibits appropriate professional boundaries with staff, volunteers, and patrons.
Presents oneself in a professional manner that demonstrates the values of WOW
Living
Ensures warming centre policies and procedures are followed and communicates
concerns in a calm, clear and compassionate manner.
Deals confidently and respectfully with volatile and unpredictable situations
including those in which mental health and addiction issues are factors. Non-
violent crisis intervention training will be provided as part of the onboarding
process.
Monitors access to the warming centre and regularly monitors the environment,
guests, and all accessible public spaces in the facility on a regular basis.
Maintains paper and electronic records including incident reports, logbook, and
warming centre attendance reports.
Engages with guests to provide feedback, when requested.
Performs routine janitorial duties as required.
Administers basic first aid and maintains applicable records. CPR/AED training
will be provided as part of the onboarding process.
Makes referrals to community agencies as needed.
Monitors and reports any facility issues including maintenance, cleanliness, and
pest control issues as required.
Works as a team member to provide these services.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Post-secondary education,
or
experience in the social service industry
or
lived
experience & WOW Living basic training.
Related experience working with vulnerable populations
First Aid Level 1/CPR considered an asset.
Additional training and qualifications in safe talk, mental health first aid, and other
related qualifications considered an asset.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the community and social service agencies and programs
in the area.
Understanding of and commitment to individuals experiencing homelessness
who may also suffer from issues related to substance use, mental health,
physical and/or cognitive disabilities and other issues related to poverty and
marginalization.
Conflict and de-escalation skills especially in unpredictable, volatile, and
emergency situations including situations in which mental health and addiction
are factors.
Excellent verbal communication skills
Ability to exercise excellent judgment and to do so independently when required.
Strong Emotional Intelligence.
Ability to actively listen.
Willing and able to enforce policies, procedure and rules in a firm and
compassionate manner.
Knowledge of homelessness related agencies, services and resources or
experience working with marginalized populations is considered an asset.
A satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Police Check.
