About the Role:
Calling all Students! If you enjoy being outdoors and engaging with people, this could be the job for you! As a Downtown Outreach Worker, you will play a key role in fostering community connections and improving safety within the Calgary Downtown Association boundaries. Working in teams of two, you will collaborate with community stakeholders, respond to concerns, and build positive relationships for long-term impact. This position involves direct interaction with vulnerable populations, offering information, resources, and transportation as needed. You will also help develop processes for open dialogue between stakeholders to enhance community safety and efficiency in outreach programs. Your responsibilities will include:
Acting professionally, treating all clients with respect, dignity, and compassion
Conduct community sweeps and engage with individuals who may not seek out services independently
Provide transportation and connect individuals to appropriate resources
Utilize independent thinking and sound decision-making to assist clients, particularly during inclement weather
Advocate for clients and collaborate with partner agencies in social services and housing
Drive an agency van daily to transport clients when appropriate
Provide immediate response to crisis situations
Conduct and complete housing assessments with clients (NSQ's)
Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with privacy policies and Alpha House procedures
Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners and engage with the broader downtown community
Assess community concerns and coordinate meetings or sessions to address and resolve issues
About You
We are looking for a compassionate and proactive individual with strong interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have:
A strong belief in harm reduction and a compassionate, non-judgmental attitude
A Diploma (2-year) or Degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Health Sciences, or a related field from a publicly funded post-secondary institution (those in progress may be considered)
A valid Class 5 (non-GDL) driver's license and a willingness to obtain a Class 4 license within 60 days
Experience in communications or outreach work with individuals experiencing homelessness and/or addiction is an asset
A deep understanding of addiction, mental health needs, and the ability to work with vulnerable individuals
Strong advocacy and relationship-building skills
Comfort working in environments with potential risks of violence and exposure to bodily fluids
An understanding and appreciation of the Protection of Persons in Care Act (document provided before orientation if needed)
