Job Description

META is seeking multiple Optical Scientists in Metrology for our facility in Dartmouth, NS. You will play a key role in developing the measurement tools that are critical to the further development of META's broad range of platform technologies that include metamaterials, holographic elements, optical filters, sensors, conductive films, and more.

What You'll Do:

You will be responsible for developing, designing, building, and supporting specialized optical instrumentation for measuring surfaces, components, and systems in support to Meta's wide range of technologies, products, and development projects. You will also provide technical expertise and support for a wide range of commercial instruments such as interferometers, ellipsometers, spectrometers, optical microscopes, SEM, AFM, and various visual inspection systems.

Some of the typical responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the wider R&D team to understand the measurement requirements and determine the appropriate metrology resources to support specific development projects
  • Developing, designing, and building custom instruments from concept through prototype (often on a tight time schedule)
  • Working with users of both custom and commercial instrumentation to ensure that they are correctly acquiring and interpreting measurement results
Minimum qualifications:
  • BS with 5 years, MS with 3 Years, or recent PhD in physics, optics, mechanical electrical engineering or related field
  • Hands on laboratory experience (i.e. not afraid to turn a wrench, drill a hole, or solder a connection), curious, and eager to learn
  • Experience designing, building, and testing optical instruments
  • Working knowledge of Python, including experience with hardware interfaces, motion control, scientific data analysis and/or image processing
  • Experience using interferometers, ellipsometers, spectrometers, optical microscopes, SEM, AFM, and/or visual inspection systems
Preferred qualifications:
  • Optical and/or mechanical design experience
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques
  • Experience with analog electronics and/or embedded systems
