Job Description

Cooledge Lighting is a leader in architectural lighting, pushing the boundaries of LED technology to create innovative, high-performance lighting solutions. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Optical Engineer to join our team and play a key role in developing advanced lighting systems that redefine architectural illumination.

This is a 6-month contract position with the potential for extension, offering a great opportunity to contribute to exciting projects while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic and innovative environment.

Position Responsibilities, includes but not limited to:



Conduct optical measurements and characterization of LEDs, luminaires, and LED array designs using integrating spheres, goniophotometers, and other photometric measurement tools.

Perform hands-on prototyping and optical testing to validate and optimize product designs.

Develop and execute optical simulations using tools like LightTools, TracePro, or equivalent software to model and analyze light distribution and to generate photometric files for use in lighting design software.

Work closely with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, product management, and operations to integrate optical systems into final product designs.

Support the development of optical components (e.g., light guides, reflectors, diffusers) for improved performance and efficiency.

Ensure compliance with industry standards, including UL certification and other regulatory requirements.

Interact with suppliers to source and evaluate optical materials and components.

Maintain thorough documentation of test results, designs, and validation processes.

Communicate findings effectively through technical reports and presentations to cross-functional teams.

Required Qualifications



BSc in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

3-7 years of experience in optical measurements, LED characterization, or lighting system development.

Proficiency in MATLAB for data analysis and optical simulations.

Experience with LightTools, TracePro, or equivalent optical modeling software.

Familiarity with photometric and radiometric testing methodologies.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on complex optical challenges.

Ability to interact with suppliers and manage component selection for optical systems.

Strong communication and presentation skills to convey complex optical concepts to non-optical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications



Experience in LED lighting and architectural lighting applications.

Knowledge of materials science and polymers related to optics.

Understanding of UL, ASHRAE 90.1, Title 24, DLC, ENERGY STAR, and other lighting industry regulations.

Hands-on experience with SolidWorks or CAD software for optical design integration.
