Water Services has an exciting opportunity for practicum/co-op students currently enrolled in a recognized Water/Wastewater Technician Program. As an Operator Trainee, you will assist in the physical inspection, operation, and maintenance of the water distribution system and wastewater lift stations. The role is focused on learning about operations and maintenance of the overall water system Through rotational assignments, observation, classroom and hands on experience. Primary duties include:

  • Assist with valve survey, primary response and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Operation: Assist in system shutdowns and return to service of the distribution system.
  • Maintenance: Assist in the preparation of equipment and chambers for maintenance activities (Pressure Reducing Value [PRV] and Air Valve [AR] Chambers).
  • Water Quality: assist in flush and sample activities, testing for water quality parameters such as chlorine and turbidity.
  • Additional activities: Assist with leak location, hydrant repair, and other system activities as required.





Qualifications
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED).
  • Currently enrolled in a qualified Water and Wastewater Technician Program and completion of one semester, OR enrolled in fourth class Power Engineering program and completion of one semester.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver\'s License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver\'s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Success in this position requires applicants to hold safety as a value, as working safely is critical in all tasks performed and in all decisions made.

Working Conditions: Working outside in various locations and conditions throughout the city requiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Regular exposure to odours, traffic and various weather conditions. Regularly required to perform physical activities.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to report to various city locations.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator\'s permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.





Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
