Water Services has an exciting opportunity for practicum students currently enrolled in a recognized Water/Wastewater Technician Program. As a Plant Operator Trainee you will assist in the operation of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) through physical inspection and Data Acquisition and Control System monitoring, as well as labour intensive tasks and sampling. Primary duties include:

  • Headworks/pretreatment: monitor mechanical, electronic and computerized systems and equipment; operate grit removal equipment and rake, clean, and hose under bins and conveyor.

  • Collect a variety of samples from bio-reactors, primary and final effluent, ultra violet (UV) channels, dissolved air flotation (DAF) and digesters.
  • Primary clarifiers and pumphouses: inspect, monitor, clean and maintain components.
  • Secondary clarifiers: monitor return activated sludge (RAS) uptake and pump; ensure proper flow; clear debris; read and record blanket readings.
  • Assist in the preparation of equipment and process vessels for maintenance activities

  • Ultra violet (UV) disinfection facility monitor channels to open and close control gates; monitor algae screens, composite samplers, chemscan.

  • Bio-reactors: monitor flow rates, check for air leaks, monitor dissolved oxygen levels and suspended solids, check discrepancies.





Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED).

  • Currently enrolled in a qualified Water and Wastewater Technician Program and completion of one semester, or enrolled in 4th class Power Engineering program and completion of one semester.

  • Success in this position requires applicants to hold safety as a value, as working safely is critical in all tasks performed and in all decisions made.

Working Conditions: Working in the wastewater treatment plant requiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), regular exposure to odors, regularly required to perform physical activities.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.

  • Successful candidates will be expected to report to various city locations.

  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.





Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
