THE OPPORTUNITY


The Operator- Drainage is responsible for the operation of facilities, vehicles and equipment in accomplishing all operations and maintenance tasks assigned in the delivery of programs and services in the Drainage division of the city. The incumbent will perform all tasks directly related to, or in support of core operations and maintenance programs including the storm distribution system, natural and manmade waterways, stormwater management facilities and the storm sewer collection system. This position reports to the Manager of Drainage and the Foreman of Drainage.



This is for one (1) permanent full time position. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).



The hourly rate for this position is:


Step 1 - $34.48

Step 2 - $35.50

Step 3 - $36.30

Step 4 - $37.31
RESPONSIBILITIES


1. Stormwater collections, Maintenance and Service

Ensure operations are carried out in accordance with all regulatory and guidance documents. Operating motorized water craft. Facility maintenance operation and cleaning. Sampling water. Utilization of various technologies, ie: GIS, Ipads, underground diagnostic camera, work related applications. Excavation and repair by hydrovac and/or excavator backhoe. Maintain drainage operations records and reports. Participate in the planning and execution of storm system maintenance programs Assist or conduct inspections. Lead, direct and coordinate a work crew as assigned. Storm sewer main flushing operation (hydrovac/flusher unit) and/or swamper duties. Assisting in manhole, catch basin, as well as SWMF inspections and repairs. Assisting with underground storm sewer service and repairs - excavation and repair by hydrovac and/or excavator backhoe. Respond to system emergency calls (flooding, spill response etc.). Landscaping, ditching, vegetation control (chainsaw), vegetation management and pest control/Trapping. Interpretation of engineered drawings and as-builts.


2. Maintenance of vehicles, equipment and hand tools.

Inspect, clean and perform minor maintenance of tools, equipment and/or vehicles.


3. Client Relations

Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner. Provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Develop and maintain ongoing working relationship with vendors, contractors, and various City departments. Determine appropriate responses and required assistance to address emergent issues encountered Monitor contractors to ensure they are working safely, and work is to the City's specifications.


4. Other Duties


Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time. Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors. Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the "Values, We Live By". All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory. Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures. Perform other job-related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS


Required Qualifications:


High School Diploma or GED. One (1) year experience in the tasks and operation of equipment. Must obtain an Alberta Class 3Q Motor Vehicle Operators license within the probationary period. Ability to obtain an Alberta boat licence within the probationary period. Must obtain an Alberta Environment and Parks Wastewater Collection Certification Level 1 to achieve Senior Operator level. Excellent collaborative negotiation and problems solving skills. Strong customer service orientation and the ability to build positive, productive business relationships. Ability to develop, implement and evaluate innovative plans. Ability to work both independently as well as within a multifaceted team environment. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in interpersonal dealings which are difficult, highly sensitive and confidential and may involve exposure to the media or public criticism. Ability to analyze and interpret administrative procedures, regulations, legal documents, and legislation. Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word.


Asset Qualifications:


Alberta Environment and Parks Wastewater Collection Certification Level 1.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


Class 5 Driver's License required. Class 3 with air preferred. Driver's Abstract - must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver's Abstract. Criminal Record Check Clearance. Alberta boaters license-Transportation Canada.


Working Environment:


Monday to Friday. Hours of Work: Typically 8:00am to 4:30pm or shift work may be required. Overtime required. On call rotation may be required. Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic. Exposure to noise levels that may exceed 85 decibels.
