Position Summary:



Reporting to the Roads and Drainage Supervisor during winter operations and Director of Community Services during summer operations, the Roads and Drainage/Harbour Operator is responsible for the efficient operation, maintenance, and safety of town facilities and infrastructure. This new position involves duties at the Harbour, as well as the Roads and Drainage Division, with seasonal shifts between summer and winter operations.



Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Summer Operations:



Safely operate and maintain facility related equipment while performing facility maintenance, preventative maintenance required within the Harbour. Operate and maintain town vehicles, heavy equipment including but not limited to the front end loader and skid steer for Harbour maintenance. This includes required documentation of maintenance logs, daily inspections, and service records. Assist with operations which include assisting docking vessels, securing vessels to docks, aid vessels in departure from slips or fuel dock, fueling vessels, and using the pump out system to discharge waste from a vessel to the Town's waste system. Assist with general administrative duties including Harbour transient slip allocation, ice time rentals, hall rentals, on site cemetery transactions and cash/credit card sales and reconciliation. Safely supervise and maintain accurate records of the Harbour fuel system under the Technical Safety Standards Authority and the Liquid Fuel Handling Code 2017. Safely utilize and care for any janitorial chemicals under Workplace Hazardous Material Information System requirements. Inspect and perform general landscaping and maintenance to determine functionality, detect malfunctions and needed repairs while making notes and recommendations. Liaise with other departments, ratepayers, and the public, as well as special interest groups on matters pertaining to Town interests Participate in scheduled rotation of "on-call emergency pager" as established and be available to immediately respond to after hours and weekend calls, where appropriate. Perform all work activities in a manner which meets all health and safety policies, laws or regulations. Provide leadership to part-time staff from time to time as designated. During in water harbour operations, may be designate at the Thornbury Municipal Harbour when the Lead Hand is not available. Promote high standards of customer service. To perform other duties as assigned from time to time

Winter Operations:



Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the town's road and drainage infrastructure. Perform tasks such as snow removal, ice blading, tree removal, cold patch applications, sanding/salting, and maintaining drainage systems including ditches, swales, water courses, and culverts. Assist other departments and Operations divisions as needed. Comply with health and safety practices, standard operating guidelines, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Promote high standards of customer service.

What you will need:



High school diploma or equivalent. Pleasure Craft Operators' Card is required (if not available, must be obtained within first 6 months of employment) Class G license for summer operations. Class DZ required for winter operations. VHF Marine Radio License is required (if not available, must be obtained within first month of employment) Fuel Safety Marine Attendant Course is required (if not available, must be obtained within first month of employment) Propane Handling Certificate is required (if not available, must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment) Must complete two sections of T.J. Mahony Road School through the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA). Competency in operating equipment such as backhoes, tractors, snow removal equipment, and snow plows. Strong mechanical aptitude for routine vehicle maintenance. Ability to perform general repairs and maintenance. Working at Heights Certification is required (if not available, must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment) Knowledge of security and emergency procedures to ensure the security of all facilities and the safety of patrons including Standard First Aid, CPR C & AED. Proven communication skills to respond to general information requests from internal and external customers. Ability to interpret and comply with company policies and procedures Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing Able to work well under pressure and tight time constraints Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, perform cleaning, maintenance, and minor landscaping activities Ability to use hand tools, ladders, and work with mechanical equipment. Must be able to work independently, as well as function in a group as a team player. Ability to work in varying weather conditions, from very cold to very hot and humid. Able to work shift with varying start and finish times, including nights, weekends, statutory holidays and in inclement weather. Able to work with minimal supervision, follow and carry out instructions. Demonstrated interpersonal skills to communicate with staff and to provide clear information.

What we offer:



This is a new, full-time permanent opportunity for a currently vacant position at the Town. The hourly range for this role is $29.53 - $34.55 (2025 Rate). The Town also offers the following to our employees:
