Our client in Toronto, ON is actively looking for an Operations Manager to join their team.

Title: Operations Manager

Salary: $90,000 - $120,000/yr

BASIC FUNCTION: The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing production operations, including overseeing maintenance of production machinery, ensuring inventory is produced and/or ordered as needed so that all customer orders are manufactured, packed, and shipped in a timely manner. This position oversees customer service duties in conjunction with coordinating the production schedules at the various production locations based on customer orders to ensure optimal resource utilization and timely delivery. This position is also responsible for ensuring production department and adherence to quality standards, and training production staff as required

  • Experience in steel fabrication industry

  • Able to perform in changing situations which require analysis and evaluation to determine action and solution to problems

AUTHORITIES: The following are principal authorities granted to the Production Manager:
  • Exercise the responsibilities and perform the duties of this position. This includes decision-making authority for all responsibilities and duties.
  • Approved purchases up to but not exceeding $2,500.00.
  • Add and remove responsibilities and duties from all subordinates in order to accomplish broader company goals.
  • Set priorities and assign tasks for direct subordinates to ensure that jobs come in on budget and on schedule.
MAJOR DUTIES: Operations Leadership
  • Set benchmarks for technical and operational excellence for each of the operations functions and then continually seek to meet or surpass targeted benchmarks
  • Oversee operations to ensure the company quality standards are maintained and address and resolve any breakdowns in processes affecting quality
  • Identify emerging trends in the industry and economy and determine best way to take advantage of them
  • As a supervisor/manager, support management in the day to day operations
  • Support the Sales function in creating, developing, enhancing or modifying the production to meet the needs of existing and potential clients
  • Identify areas for possible cost reduction and develop new systems and processes to improve performance.
  • Design new production methods through checking costing reports and visual inspections
  • Perform regular time studies and analysis of processes, identifying and testing the effects of process improvement initiatives and documenting and ensuring all employees are following the company process
  • Train operations staff to use procedures and ensure that standard operations procedures are being followed so production improvements can be introduced and monitored
  • Work with Sales and Customer Service to address important Operational issues that arise regarding specific accounts when required
  • Facilitate coordination and communication among manufacturing locations to support smooth day-to-day operations and improvement activities
Scheduling
  • Resolve scheduling issues that require the authorization of overtime or outsourcing
  • Ensure daily scheduling is being conducted
  • Monitor actual performance against the schedule and take action as required to bring production back on schedule.
  • Keep the Sales and Marketing Manager and Branch Managers aware of potential delays due to resource shortages or other issues
Operations Monitoring
  • Conduct weekly meetings with direct reports to establish priorities and be kept informed of progress
  • Conduct regular visual inspection of operations, building and staff
  • Identify departmental capacity and monitor productivity against this capacity. Identify and implement modifications that will improve performance
  • Establish a maintenance review schedule for machines and vehicles, review periodically for completion and review
  • Operations Management
  • Develop systems and processes to improve project management requirements, and maintain Operations manual
  • Lead projects, clarify requirements, priorities, and activity to eliminate ambiguity, be decisive and work well under pressure, particularly when faced with unexpected occurrences or delays
  • Ensure that the all direct reports are adhering to safety standards and protocols for product handling and storage
  • Research custom needs for customers and do specialty work
  • Deal with manufacturing problems and implement improvements when required
Customer Service when Required
  • Provide superior customer service on the phone and for in-office visits, maintaining a friendly and professional demeanour at all times
  • Maintain and enhance product knowledge
  • Answer sales calls as required
  • Enter customer orders into Nexus
  • Promote CPPS in a positive manner
  • Build client relationships to solidify return potential
  • Engage in problem solving for back orders or delivery issues
  • Source speciality items as needed or delegate as needed
General
  • Follow company procedures to both their letter and intent
  • Develop, implement, and update procedures on tasks relating to the duties of this position to promote communications and adequate information flow
  • Comply with all required standards including: government regulations, health and safety standards, corporate, departmental and standard business policies and practices, procedures, area work instructions, and quality standards
  • Complete other tasks as required
